***Official***Match #16- New Zealand vs Afghanistan- October 18th-Chennai (D/N)

Also I think we need to adjust our mindset towards the minnow games. Afghanistan beat good teams. Not every day, but it happens and minnows are usually competitive now.

If NZ can beat Sri Lanka, then I think 1 out of the other 4 will probably be enough to advance especially given the mixed performances from everyone else besides India. That'll be 6 wins, which was the cut-off for advancing in 2019.
Along with good NRR, which we have.

I feel like with a few upsets this tournament already, 6 should be pretty safe.

280 on that pitch was a massive score. The equivalent of 350 on a good deck. Every batsman struggled to accelerate the scoring except Chapman. Genuinely difficult batting track.
After posting that score I was confident NZ would win by 100+ and I'm a pessimistic prick.
Yeah, absolutely. It wasn’t an easy pitch to bat on by any means.

It was an entertaining innings to watch, a few setbacks to begin with, Latham and Phillips dragging us back, then them both getting out at the wrong time, but Chapman and Santner putting the icing on. Once we passed 250 I think the game was done, and 288 was a really good score. A lesson in not panicking and working your way to a good total from the Blackcaps.

What do you mean? Think we took them pretty seriously
We beat them by 149 runs, and I think that’s because we did take them seriously. They are a pretty decent side and you wouldn’t want to go out all guns blazing thinking it’ll be a walk in the park to get to 450. We put the mahi in when batting and it paid off.

It was pretty clear our top order respected them vs the new ball. Azmat bizarrely spurred a collapse out of seemingly nowhere and then we went full cake/icing like it was 2015. It was good cricket *

*outside of the Afghani catching

I take that more as "the Black Caps clearly took the game seriously but insane fans like TH shouldn't assume we can always aim for 300+"
Yeah I think being cautious after losing the early wickets actually shows they took them extremely seriously.

Even though England conceded a pretty good score to lose, usually the absolute biggest danger to lose to Afghanistan is to get rolled by their good bowlers. A middling score batting first pretty much ensures victory. They wanted to lock that in no matter what to get the two points instead of using it as open wicket practice for better opponents.
