Bowler / Batting Analogues

ma1978

International Debutant
The Dale Steyn / Brian Lara thing got me thinking, since they are the perfect analogues of each others.

Some others

Donald Bradman - no one
Greg Chappell - Dennis Lillee
Sunil Gavaskar - Imran Khan
Sachin Tendulkar - Muttiah Muralitharan
Ricky Ponting - Shane Warne
Viv Richards - Wasim Akram
Allan Border - Richard Hadlee
Garry Sobers - Glenn Mcgrath
Virender Sehwag- Ravi Ashwin
Steve Smith - Curtly Ambrose
Alastair Cook - Jimmy Anderson
Kevin Pietersen - Mitchell Johnson
Jack Hobbs - Sydney Barnes
Len Hutton - Fred Trueman
Ravi Jadeja - Ravi Jadeja
Ian Botham - Kapil Dev
Kapil Dev - Ian Botham
Inzamam al Haq - Rangana Herath

International Captain
I'd add :

Ken Barrington-Joel Garner

Two players who were just solid at what they did but who aren't necessarily rated that highly inspite of their amazing stats.

I don’t majorly disagree with most of these. But Gavaskar and Imran? I don’t get that at all. Nor Sobers and McGrath. If anything shouldn’t it be Sobers and Imran and Gavaskar and McGrath (or you could swap Richards/Wasim with those?)

Adorable Asshole

International Regular
Sobers and McGrath. Former was one of the best bats to watch. Latter was a ****ing bore.

I would say Hutton and Mcgrath is a better dichotomy.

It’s the bating and the bowling. Gavaskar was the second best bat of his time and excelled against the Windies; Imran was the second best bowler of the same time and excelled against the Windies.

Sobers had a long career of excellence against all comers; McGrath had a long career of excellence against all comers

Wasim / Richards is that their peers and pundits often consider them the GOAT (or at least post Bradman), but the stats differ

Is there an argument for Gavaskar being the best of his time? Was good against all teams. And played the two toughest bowling line-up of his time exceedingly well(with a joke helmet).

There’s an argument but it probably leans towards Richards. That said, there’s an argument for Imran but it leans towards Hadlee. It’s all very close.

Disagree with most of these but McGrath/Tendulkar is one that's often thrown about here. Richards/Wasim too.

Nah, Viv was has a good record all conditions, against peak bowlers in those conditions. Gavaskar failed against any proper Australian attack in Australia, but piled runs against very sub par attacks there.

And Gavaskar has good stats against the quartet, but that's exaggerated by really great performances when only Roberts or Roberts and a raw Holding were playing. He had a great series against them in Ind, but not in WI.

Imran is a top four bowler of all time, and Gavaskar amongst the top twelve or so, but certainly not as good in his primary discipline as Imran.

Wasn’t meant to be pedantic player rankings; just analogues that came to mind like:

Zak Crawley / Mohammed Sami
Michael Hussey / Jasprit Bumrah
Steve Tikolo / Ole Mortensen

Patience and Accuracy+Gut

State Vice-Captain
I would say,

Steve Smith - Bill O’Reilly

Near perfect records. Similar mentality plus different technique compared to rest.

Stan McCabe - Keith Miller (Bowler)

Better than what their exact stats says. Seemed to always step up when needed.

Victor Trumper - Dennis Lillee

At their peak, probably the most famous batsman and quick in Australia ever. Also both players stats don’t quite match the peer review and the reputation.
