*Official* Match #10 — Australia Vs South Africa Oct 12th, Lucknow

Aus are going to win the thing, aren't they?
If it were a case of a good team having a slow start to a tournament, then yeah. Trouble is I'm not sure that's the case here.
They've just looked so bad.

Anyhoo, let's see how much they improve against SL.

A mate was telling me this morning about how Smith had been sawn off by a DRS conspiracy. Watched the highlights and it's just out, right?

I've seen Smith get out lbw many times playing from the crease to balls which rebound into the leg side, there's always an illusion that they are highish and leg sideish because he's so far back and across.

Australia's batting has a problem.

It's an accident waiting to happen when you stack your side with all-rounders, with not enough proper batsmen.

The fact Warner isn't the player he once was means Marnus and Smith are the only 2 true batsmen. As I said earlier, It's utter madness that Khawaja didn't make the squad, especially in India conditions.

Yeah, they definitely look bad. I can't believe quite how bad.

It feels very old school, almost pick the Test team then tweak it. I’m not saying that’s what they’ve done but it has that air about it.

Semis still achievable but can probably only drop one more game I reckon? So would need to beat 2 of England, Pakistan and NZ
Possibly so. I don’t think they’re playing well enough though and the point you make about picking test players across all formats is a bit of a factor imo. Not the main one but as spark mentioned overnight, a lot of the side looks cooked tb - the fieldig is the biggest give away in that regard. Been a long year. Shows a real lack of foresight and planning that they’ve got to this point tbh

He averages 36 with the ball and 17 with the bat from 17 ODI games for Australia, realistically you're not going to be a main player with those stats ..

I think the guy whose been unlucky from a bowling perspective is Jhye Richardson.
Richardson is a walking injury

I'm afraid this just isn't true. The only all-rounder that doesn't merit a place in the team as a batsman alone is Stoinis, and everyone has agreed for years that he shouldn't be anywhere near the team. Mitch Marsh and Glenn Maxwell are essentially playing as batsmen, with other skills as a bonus. Cam Green is a borderline case but it's fair to say he would be picked as a batsman ahead of just about anyone else in domestic cricket too.

The only guy in Aus domestics who should probably be in the squad as a batsman ahead of the non-Stoinis all-rounders is Ashton Turner. Khawaja not so much, and a big reason for that is that like almost everyone else in the Aus team he needs to bat at the top of the order to be effective. You can't pick 7 opening batsmen in a team.

So in summary, Australia aren't so much picking a bunch of all-rounders because they want a lot of all-rounders. It's just that 3 or 4 of their best ODI batsmen just happen to be all-rounders

I think the loss of Travis Head is what's allowing a nothing like Stoinis to play. Essentially moving everyone up in the order. Losing Head and playing Stoinis is almost like going from an 11-man team to 10.

Having said all this they simply played very bad in the games they lost. Having Head, Khawaja or Turner probably wouldn't have changed it

Head is a better bowler than Maxwell but that’s largely irrelevant as Cummins doesn’t bowl him anyway

Yeah there's no real shame in losing the two games they've lost, both India and SA look the goods this year and both ought to go deep into the tournament. But I'm not copping that fielding display, that was disgraceful.

Is Abbott a permanent fielder. He seems to be never off the field.
South Africa have only 5 bowlers. Brave.

The fielding was a big problem during the Ashes too. I'm not sure how seriously to take the claims that they no longer actually practice fielding intensively but if so then McDonald needs immediate sacking.
