Just pick Shami if pitch will not assist spin.
You under-rate lower order runs. It can be the difference between a win and a loss. Either Thakur or Ashwin should be at 8. Cannot have a tail of Shami-Siraj-Bumrah-Kuldeep. That will be terrible and a recipe for disaster.

Even in conditions that don't assist spin, I'd play Ashwin over Shardul.

Conversely you under-rate importance of securing 40 out of 50 overs with your 4 best bowlers.

Long string of low score dismissals!

I bet even Shami can produce similar single digits runs to go with the odd double digit runs.

Thakur is only a small upgrade on Shami in terms of batting and is a huge downgrade in terms of bowing! It's bizarre that they keeping picking him.

If you have genuine bowler on flat pitch you will concede less runs so less runs to get and you won't need to rely on lower order runs to begin with. On a flat pitch you trust your top order to get the job done without needing #8 to score. If you collapse on a batting pitch, you don't deserve to win anyways.
