Black Caps Squad

I think Chapman is quality but can see him getting the boot mainly because he just doesn't ''fit in'' to the team.
That is there's just no sensible place for him to bat, he's good enough to bat 4 or 5 but these spots will be taken.
So to accommodate the team he will face the axe at some stage, but he's only 29 and he'll be back.

Right, but what value would Young provide at 4? All it does is push more Test like players down 1 place & means we have less fire-power at 6 & 7.. HBs & Cricaddict's sides above would see 6 Test batsmen in the top 6.. Look at the balance of other top batting sides like India, England, Aust & SA in comparison, they are powerful and dynamic at 6 & 7.

I'm not really sure mate but I feel Chapman coming in at 7 is a waste unless we have lost 5 wickets with plenty of overs remaining.
He can smash it big time but usually only when he has his eye in. Last night is a good example of his selection being rather forlorn when he came in
and basically did nothing when putting the foot down immediately was what was required.

Without Macewell the only no.7 we have is Neesham, who is currently close to woeful.
Anyone else will be either batting too high or too low. Chapman doesn’t bowl and Phillips does. Therefore, Chapman misses out.

Mitchell, Phillips and Chapman are more than good enough at power hitting to bat low but it's a waste of their maximum potential. One should still do it though if we can make the bowling vulnerability work on motorways.

Mitchell in particular has made a career of walking at everyone and smoking them straight then using his excellent pull shot when they go short. When he plays on the front foot 'normally' he is much more vulnerable. He's also has the most odi like tempo of our test players.

I think I'd use Latham as a floater but list him at 7. Latham himself has gotten a lot better at finishing, especially in India.

We're going to be facing the death bowling of Starc/Bumrah at some stage and having 7 real batsmen sounds good.

So I think I'm talking myself out of Neesham, which is a shame because he has the talent to have played 50-100 matches in all 3 formats.

Phillips at 6, Chapman (or Neesh) at 7, Santner at 8 & Henry/Sodhi at 9 is the perfect amount of icing for us down the order, so no need at all for anymore cake from 6 down.

With the likes of Conway, Ravindra, KW, Mitchell & Latham in the top 5, that is more than enough cake, and anymore than that is restricting us and hurting our balance.

And those for those suggesting Santner to bat at 7, we cannot compete with the big sides in terms of batting depth unless we have him at no. 8. Even in T20s 7 feels too high for Santner, so most definitely so in the 50 over format.

Also, for those who still don't recognise Chapman's x-factor especially in SC conditions, and want to judge him on that 1 failure last night clearly haven't been following NZ in the last 12 months, guy can be world class on his day.
Agree with u , I would have done exactly the same

But why do I think young also has a chance as he did well in odi series vs bang

I would use Latham in that context, too. You've got one of the best limited overs batsmen in the world below him, it would be criminal not to use Phillips in the situations that suit. At 200-3 after 30 or so, or similar, I want Phillips. At 100-3 off 20 or worse, OK give me Latham. Guys can be flexible enough to play an ODI series then a T20 series, then a franchise league in the same month, they should be able to get their heads around being ready to bat at any stage.

I'm also a Chapman at 7 guy, he can get going from ball one and hits in all sorts of areas. I don't need him batting 20 overs, if he gets a 30 off 13 in a big game, happy to carry him the rest of the way. Neesham is yesterday's man, he shouldn't even be in the conversation, the squad, the whatever. Santner is too high at 7, and Phillips is too low at 7. So I need Chapman there.

agree with hb's side. cannot drop Rachin and Young after the form they've shown so far. Chapman should be the one to be dropped. Philips, Santner and Henry is decent hitting power at the end. Mitchell can go hitting too when needed.
But then you're picking Young at 4. Glenn Phillips is probably a better four than Young. So is Mitchell. Maybe Latham is, too. It doesn't make sense. If Rachin is the guy (which he is) then Young doesn't have a spot, no matter how harsh that might feel. The quality of a side is often reflected when you have to drop someone who's actually going pretty well.

Getting the death overs right in this tournament looks absolutely vital. Pakistan won last night by getting the job done late, Sri Lanka only scored 50 in the last 9 overs.

I'm a Chapman-at-7 guy too but that was a disappointing innings from him v Netherlands. Not necessarily the shot to get out, which is an inevitable risk of hitting out, moreso the way he was shut down by Netherlands' spinners to be 5(12) prior to that ball. I hope we do give him a couple more runs at this role, but he needs a score very soon.

I would still like to see him given a couple of overs per match with the ball too, if nothing else it would get him involved in the game.

All these pages and pages of debate about our batting as, unusually, we have too many good options. Whereas our bowling is the bit that is far more likely to bite us this tournament. Extreme dependence on Boult, Henry and Santner. I'm happy with Sodhi and Ferguson too, though acknowledge they are more of a risk. Pretty much zero depth after that. Our fifth and potentially fourth bowler will be highly targetable all tournament - England should have exploited this harder but failed, some other teams won't be so kind. And god forbid we get an injury to one of those key bowlers.

Yeah we all take it for granted that they won't go with Santner at 9 again but that was legitimately insane and they ran with it to start the tournament. Hopefully #NeverAgain.

TBF they did say that Ferg came up not feeling 100% that day so I think it was a last minute XI choice
