Not on roads but more against incoming deliveries from pace bowlers. He did well against Australia because their natural bowling length is the good length, while on the other hand he struggled against Pakistan and England due to their bowling lengths being much fuller and they swung it back into the batsman.

If you notice his performance against South Africa in his last few years, the reason why he did well was because Steyn never had an inswing/off cutter in his armory. He didn't bring the ball back into right handers unless it's reversing.
Good observation. I mentioned roads because I have seen him not capitalising in easier conditions on quite a few occasions.

Sobers simply bowled multiple styles, which is not unprecedented at all.

Sydney Barnes bowled in a very old school style which was I think was aided rather generously by the conditions of uncovered pitches at the time. No one can, or even has really attempted to replicate it because it simply wouldn't work. I think he most certainly had much more control than most other uncovered pitch abusing bowlers of the time, which was honed by his very professional approach. But absolutely can't compare him to modern bowlers.
Difference of opinion here really as no one has bowled completely like Barnes at that quality since him. Grimmett is said to have developed the flipper but Walter Mead was already bowling those 30 Years ago. Grimmett being a spin obsessed just revived the lost art which does work regardless of the pitch.

On my Personal and with acceptance biased opinion, I still think it would work just as well. Alec Bedser is probably the only one who actually managed to bowl The Barnes Ball and it did work for him regardless of the pitch. Bedser is definitely the closest and bowled like Barnes to some extent. Idk if anyone today actually works as hard with the dedication that Bedser did who was basically a human bowling machine.

100% agree with this.

Nathan Lyon

8th highest test wicket taker & in with a shot of overtaking Warne

Makhaya Ntini. Enjoyed his bowling, but if we go by plain numbers(ignoring the sample size in some cases), he was:

Average in Zim, Pak, SL, Australia and NZ.

Serviceable in WI and England.

Pretty good in SA, India and Bangladesh.

Bairstow. When good he is great but so many poor periods and his glovework is similar too. Two huge highs as a test player and a great pyjama record for years but has basically sucked since the injury and is fat.
