I think his talking more about the money he could be getting in t20 leagues which he kind of does already instead of playing some meaningless short form series before icc tournaments

I'd go both and drop Chapman to be brutal. I mean he is a clean striker but I feel like Chapman is a top 4 player to get the most out of him.
As I said in the Eng /NZ thread, Young could be forgiven for feeling aggrieved if it is a straight swap with Ravindra at the top when KW is fit but I still believe it's the right call, & I wouldn't shuffle Young down the order at the cost of Chapman (or Neesham) at 7 either because to pull out the old 2015 WC card, we'd have enough cake with the bat as it is with Conway, Ravindra, KW, Mitchell & Latham to then have the icing with the likes of Phillips at 6 & Chapman (maybe Neesh) at 7. If Young isn't opening there's no room elsewhere.

Unlucky for Will, but good problem for the selectors.

That's actually a pretty reasonable position to take imo
But is he wrong?

We could crap on about playing for your country and heart on your sleeve stuff but to me this just fuels my suspicion we need less T20Is apart from a world cup and more ODIs, but how do you put something at stake in those series?
Is he wrong? No he's not because it's his honest opinion, and usually I welcome that in sportspeople. I'm not thrilled with it, however, in a guy who has done nothing in 4 years to be a part of this squad. As I'm probably known for, I can get (too) emotional about representing our country and players who want to have cake + eat it with T20 leagues. I don't want to hear about context when you have 38 teams on your cricinfo profile, including the Mississauga Panthers.

This won't happen , but this is the perfect solution imo

Latham has been flop since long time with the bat and is struggling too

Just give the gloves to Conway, though latham is a better keeper

And have both young and rachin in the playing 11

Rachin will be good at 4 too

Latham's far too valuable as a middle overs player of spin in India IMO, and Conway's keeping would cost runs too.

If I wanted to play both then I'd drop Chapman and move Mitchell down the order.

1 Conway
2 Young
3 Rachin
4 Williamson
5 Latham
6 Mitchell
7 Phillips

I might even swap Phillips and Mitchell because Mitchell is a great player of pace - he could be a specialist death overs player of sorts.

But even though I think using Mitchell in a different role would be fine it still seems like too much top order cake to me. I'd just man up and drop one of them. I don't really have strong views as to which one tbh.

I can see Rachin ended up at 7 coming a mile away even though it's an awful idea.

Yeah my rather obnoxious response in the other thread is mainly around Conway keeping. It's a big load for him, he'll make mistakes and it did hurt us back at the T20 World Cup.

Latham maybe less essential with the bat when we're playing on roads, but on a pitch like Aus vs India last night we really want Latham in our middle order too.

True about the keeping, but I am still doubting his ability rn to play spin , he was getting out like a rookie in previous series

But long ago he has done well in india

Since I didn't trust Conway's keeping in the World T20 on Australian pitches, I definitely wouldn't trust it in ODIs in India.

So what are people thinking v Bangladesh at Chennai? Spinning and all, so I think:

Ravindra
Conway
Williamson
Mitchell
Latham +
Phillips
Chapman
Santner
Sodhi
Henry
Boult

Amidst games against the Netherlands and Afghanistan, we should probably take this one fairly seriously. Kane can be rested against Afghanistan at the same venue if necessary, and maybe Southee given a game. How did Ferguson go last night btw?

agree with hb's side. cannot drop Rachin and Young after the form they've shown so far. Chapman should be the one to be dropped. Philips, Santner and Henry is decent hitting power at the end. Mitchell can go hitting too when needed.

Phillips at 6, Chapman (or Neesh) at 7, Santner at 8 & Henry/Sodhi at 9 is the perfect amount of icing for us down the order, so no need at all for anymore cake from 6 down.

With the likes of Conway, Ravindra, KW, Mitchell & Latham in the top 5, that is more than enough cake, and anymore than that is restricting us and hurting our balance.

And those for those suggesting Santner to bat at 7, we cannot compete with the big sides in terms of batting depth unless we have him at no. 8. Even in T20s 7 feels too high for Santner, so most definitely so in the 50 over format.

Also, for those who still don't recognise Chapman's x-factor especially in SC conditions, and want to judge him on that 1 failure last night clearly haven't been following NZ in the last 12 months, guy can be world class on his day.
