You are genuinely reducing Smith’s effectiveness by moving him away from the power play overs. Smith can score runs at a decent clip on the back of an early wicket to set the platform to a more powerful striker like Marsh down the order

Not to mention Smith is far better technically equipped to handle the new ball so yeah you are basically reducing the efficiency of both Smith and Marsh
we’ll see what they do but if Head isn’t fit this tournament and if we keep Smith and Marnus in I’m betting we’ll continue to struggle against the big dogs. They had those recent t20 and odi series and I thought Marsh at 3 looked way better. Not only did we get better starts in the power play which is important but he helped out Warner get going a lot

You cant merge ODIs and T20s together ffs. And Marsh averaged 13 in those ODIs in South Africa

Actually when you take a deep look at it, Marsh averages 22 at 3 while striking at 81. Smith averages 53 while striking at 87 at 3 and 11 of his 12 OD tons have come there

You have no case really

and what batting order are you having then? Don’t tell me it’s marnus and smith in there. What’s your 1-7 if everyone’s fit

Smith at 3 is given regardless of Marnus's presence. Head and Warner opens and Marsh and Maxwell bats at 6 and 7 so you have the fire power to start and finish. One of Carey/ Inglis bats five as the keeper and I'm still leaning towards Carey and yes I'd give the final spot to Marnus at 4 because it is actually important in 50 over cricket to have at least couple of players who are good at rotating the strike against spin in the middle overs

Also this idea of yours that they won't be able to score 350 plus because of having both Marnus and Smith in the same side is misinformed. They scored 350 in the last ODI against India and 392 recently against South Africa and Marnus's contributions in those two games respectively were 59 ball 72 and 99 ball 124

Fair enough I see your point I still wouldnt have Marnus or Carey in there. We’ll see how they go the rest the tournament. I just hope they aren’t chopping and changing their batting line up throughout the whole tournament.

Smith and Marnus at 3 and 4 is a big worry. I don’t think they are the ideal guys you want when say you’re chasing a 320-350 total and one or both of your openers get out early they take too much time to get going which could happen a lot this tournament with how flat some the pitches have been. They need to hope Head is fit soon because him opening with Warner and Marsh coming in at 3 is a way better batting line up as they showed a few months ago
India literally just showed today the importance of having specialist batsmen who can play the situation..Strike Rate is fear factor , but it's the prolific batsmen that usually come out on top and Smith is one of them. He's a WC winner , trust him.

Does Pat Cummins get in the XI cause of his piercing eyes, luscious wavy hair and winning smile?

Deadset bog average white ball bowler. And has been for many years
He is too nice to be Aussie Captain. Almost reminds me of Steve waugh in terms of attitude. Not sledger like ponting or smith.

Very average Australian team not being helped by Cummins bowling poorly for months now

australia collapsing against quality spin bowling you tell me? well thankfully that's never happened before and so shouldn't be a sign of things to come right

This seems like a standard recent Aus odi performance. Middle order folding/ not going on after a decent start leading to an under par score; bowlers get them back into it early then Zampa dishes up dross and let’s the pressure off.

kudos to Kohli and Rahul for playing it cool and getting it done. Stark contrast with the Aus middle order - you jus t know if Aus was 3/2 we’d be all out about 120.

Match was done when Marsh dropped Kohli early. He takes that easy catch and Aus probably wins. Fair effort by him to perform such a comprehensive Marcus Harris 2019 Ashes - a quantifiably negative impact on the game for his team.

The middle order hasn’t fired for about 2 years in ODIs against any type of bowling.

When Rahul came to the crease he said Kohli told him to play it as a Test. As the fast bowlers start off bowling a Test match length, good advice.
Jadeja the stand out bowler.

When Labuschagne got out he was going off and I am sure Maxwell told him to review.

3 down for 2 was a hell of a start. If only we could have kept it up and bowled India out for 6 and two thirds.
