The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Border's effort - 11-96 - is actually the best Test match bowling performance ever by an Australian captain.

It is also one of the all time great all-round performances, because not only did he take 11 wickets while captaining Australia to victory over the world's best team, he also played innings of 75 and 16*.

And just for fun, an unconventional Aussie XI of the preceding 50 years

Morris
Simpson
Bradman
Harvey
McCabe
Miller
Benaud
Davidson
Lindwall
Oldfield+
O’Reilly

None of the other middle order options really stood out from the others for me so I decided to go with 2 AR’s which also gives us two spinners (with possibly the best keeper ever to spinners imo, his stumping record is proof of that), and batting down to 10.

Wagner is better than Boult. And Richardson over Fleming. But otherwise great team.
I was a big fan of Fleming. Great leader and was also a gun slipper.

Genuine question: Boult and Wagner have similar records but what have they been like in various conditions?

great team... but can you explain why you would call that unconventional? it has three fast bowlers / two spinners/ a specialist wk/ five top order batsmen/ one genuine all rounder/ three bowlers who could bat... it is a solid team with first choice players for every role

Its unconventional compared to most ATXIs because it only has 5 bats, 2 all rounders, 2 spinners and a keeper who doesn’t bat all that well. It makes sense though given the period and players available for selection. The unconventional part for me particularly was adding Benaud over another middle order bat.

I know Benaud is there for his ability to hold the Bat. But I would drop him and play Grimmett even for batting disadvantage who imho is around 2 leagues above Benaud as a bowler. Grum was basically obsessed with Spin, probably more than any human ever.
