Yeah. I don't have a problem with var in principle at all tbh. In fact I completely support its use. But the people operating it have to be competent, otherwise it completely defeats the point of having it in the first place.
This is where I am. We had the same issue with DRS until the umpires became competent using it.

However, I think the type of person who wants to be a football referee compared to a cricket umpire are very different. If you're willing to put up with constant abuse from fans, then you probably quite like being the centre of attention, and VAR has simply added another means of being that.

This was obviously a woeful decision (and what on earth was this refereeing team doing in Saudi Arabia on Thursday night is another question which needs answering), but it's funny that until Liverpool get a tough one, we're all kind of ok with it.

to answer the last para English refs aren’t really paid a lot are they? heard it was 70k base pay for them

agreed that Liverpool have made it seem like the biggest injustice of all time when other than the offside being wrongly called there wasn’t much of anything else being bad. it appeared that way live due to a string of calls going Tottenham’s way at 1 point but overall it wasnt that bad

And the rest!! That's the minimum base salary plus they get £1500 a game. I reckon most are getting over £150k a year, do they need to top it up in Saudi (and god knows what they got paid for that little jaunt).

thats the same as what a good player at a top club makes in a week no? football salaries are busted but even then you cant help but compare if you are working as a ref

Without VAR the Diaz goal doesn’t stand anyway. A lot if the main issues with VAR appear to be along those lines which does beg the question as to what the point of it is.
It begs the question as to why the linesman raised his flag so quickly when they're instructed to leave them down if its close...

I like that we're challenging the PGMOL. The club has had too many close title races to just let this go and worry about the potential dropped points later.

Someone has to make these ***** accountable. Naturally plenty will think it's just Liverpool sooking but I guarantee if it does lead to any sort of change it'll be for the better. I hope at the least we're thanked for it.

Referee a game max 2 times a week, paid expenses and earning double the amount a regular worker earns for a 5 day week. That's without the extras that is being mentioned above. Sign me up

ironic that none of this would have happened if the clubs didn’t vote against having the automated offside system that the world cup used which allowed Aboubakar’s banger chip to be onside

Nope, I'd sooner compare them to someone without a University degree who likes football......in which case they are utterly raking it in.

English top-flight referees are mostly very good. You complain about them because they make some stupid mistakes. But then you try to think of a single competition or league, in any country, at any level, where the refereeing isn't significantly worse than the PL. And there just isn't one.

**** VAR though.

They need to ship all the PL refs off to Saudi and replace them with Champions League refs.

Its damning how few English refs get called up to big tournaments.

I don't think that's even true. We send plenty and I think there's a quota for how many you can send too. If you watch the Champions League, you find English refs popping up all over the place.

I think the refs are ok, but when you ask them to use technology, that's when they come unstuck. It was the same with cricket for a while.

I don't think the spotlight is on the refs as much as it used to be. When I was younger I think I knew nearly every pl ref by name and face. Uriah Rennie, Phil down, Ellery, webb, Riley. These days I couldn't name many and definitely wouldn't recognise on the street other than Mike Dean who has thankfully retired.
Maybe this is because I went to most games home and away then whereas now split my games between watching arsenal and my local side enfield
