Looks like Aus team is sorted except that additional seamer.
Good team. Middle order is still a massive concern, and i'm not sold that agar at 7 is gonna work with none of inglis/carey/stoinis/green making many runs at the moment, but the bowling is good and the top 4 are all making semi consistent runs. If we don't make the semi's we should be fairly disappointed.

Don't get the sudden green hate, either, honestly. He had a bad ashes and hasn't been great these last 4 odi's, but green is still averaging 38 with the bat @88 in ODI's. It's almost like people have completely forgotten that stoinis has played 46 GAMES since september 1st 2018 and averaged 20 with the bat and 37 with the ball. The fact he's still anywhere near this team is a disgrace. Even over his entire career, stoinis averages 27 @94 with the bat and takes his wickets @43. He's not much better with the ball than green in white ball stuff, and he's a #8 with the bat ATM, maybe even with given he hasn't crossed 30 in, what, 15 innings straight now?

With Maxwell being somewhat reliable with the ball there's a good chance they'll go with an all-rounder at 8, especially if it's looking spinny.

Warner
Marsh
Smith
Marnus
Carey
Inglis/Stoinis
Maxwell
Green (?Agar)
Starc/Cumm
Zampa
Haze/Cumm

If Head were fit this would be even more likely than playing 4 bowlers

One thing people have forgotten about Stoinis is that he was always another one of the "has to bat top order" for most of his cricket. In domestic cricket he was typically an opener and needed time to play himself in, similar to an early career Shane Watson. He was forced into the "finisher" role for Australia because it was the only place for him, it's not surprising that he hasn't ever really excelled at it consistently

was stoinis always a top order bat in List-A? I know he was better opening in T20 stuff 5 years back, but my only memory of him making runs in the marsh cup was him smashing a 60 ball ton from the middle order for WA.

Ashton Turner should really have been in the side for the last 5 years. It's ****ed that we are so desperate for middle-order bats but we keep filling the side with top-order players down to 7, and even went to give Tim David a game.

was stoinis always a top order bat in List-A?
Yes. Was an opener in youth cricket and early forays into State cricket, including the Shield. I don't think he bowled much early either, pretty much just a specialist opening bat.

That team surely lacks firepower in the middle. Carey is not a 5. If the openers go early, it's hard to see how a score of over 300 happens.

Yeah but it’s been a recurring theme with that middle order for ages. And even if Head was fit I don’t think it would matter a lot because if he opens Marsh is incapable of starting against spin. We seem to have a stack of guys who can bat well in the top three but not produce a 130+ strike rate 50-70 odd in the middle order. I reckon it would almost be worth moving Warner to five if Head was fit. Warner seems to have less dramas getting going against spin than a lot of the supposed middle order specialists
One thing that's always asking for trouble though(or tempting fate) is moving a player who's scoring really impressively in a particular position.
With Warner going so well in the opening spot, moving him to the middle order is a gamble which I'd tend to think the selectors wont take.

if warner moves to 3, head and marsh can always go hard from ball one because if they get out to the new ball an opener is coming in at 3 anyway. if they get out to a spinner, warner can score quick against them from ball one too - something that marsh can't do

Cameron Green is nowhere near Shane Watson in terms of being a all rounder
Shane Watson at 24 in ODI cricket:

454 runs @32.43
33 wickets @38.27

Cameron Green at 24 in ODI cricket:

379 runs @37.90
16 wickets @40.31

Ben Stokes at 24 in ODI cricket:

544 runs @20.15
32 wickets @34.25

Chris Cairns at 24 in ODi cricket:
360 runs @ 24.00
22 wickets @ 33.45

Andrew Flintoff at 24 in ODI cricket:
450 runs @ 23.68
13 wickets @ 30.08

Jacques Kallis at 24 in ODI cricket:
2550 runs @40.46
56 wickets @30.46

Unless you comparing Green to Jacques Kallis you need to give the kid some time Slippy ..

It's crazy that Kallis had more runs than all the guys I mentioned combined at the same age ..What a prospect that legend was even in his youth , he had won SA the Champions Trophy in that time aswell .
