Are you suggesting you'd want Carey over a fully fit (which he clearly wasn't at the start of the series) Bairstow?
It would depend on which Bairstow turned up tbh. He had a terrific 12 months before he got injured tbf.

I just think he wasn't fit for the first two Tests. He'd just come back from a badly broken leg, hardly surprising his keeping wasn't the best (which is what a lot predicted and why we wanted Foakes).

Wasn't just talking about keeping, the Number 7 spot then. His keeping was good from the 3rd Test onwards and excellent by the end. Carey got 200 runs at 22, Bairstow 322 at 40.

No, but if I had to pick purely on keeping I'm taking Carey over YJB any day.

True, but getting back to the original point, he looks thoroughly lost with the bat at the mo. Apart from political reasoning, could Inglis challenge for his spot?

100%. Crazy to think that England pretty much cost themselves the Ashes by picking a half fit keeper when they had one of the best keeper bats in the world sitting on the bench.

the relative lack of OD cricket means Carey's probably been allowed to live off his 2019 WC longer than he should have. plus australia always prefers to have the same keeper in test and od cricket (imo) so there's been no real pressure on him.

Yeah but he was also really average for a lot of years before that, so has he had Mark Wood style

mid-career, or did he just have a good run of form and will return to being big average again?

He could but it isn’t as though he’s done much either and I’m not sold on his keeping tbh, whether he votes Labor or for the swill

I just think he benefitted from Bazball. His ODI career has been pretty decent, now he was allowed to go and express himself in a similar way in Tests.

TBF his peak in that one summer coincided with a REALLY bad dukes batch that was doing nothing after 10 overs. In that same summer mitchell and blundell both had insane series in the middle order vs england and pant+jadeja both made big 100's. He was definitely boosted by that a bit (was still an insane run, but not as insane as it looks purely in numbers).

Tory bootlicker means he supports the liberal party in Australia, not sure how that would translate over to your political scene.
I thought it was something like that.

I didn't know you also called your conservatives/centre-right Tories. Thought it was only Poms and Canucks.

I'm glad the Proteas keep their politics to themselves, not sure how I would feel if I knew one of the Proteas was a big ACDP, EFF, or FF+ supporter.

I don't know if tory is a common term over here. I've only ever seen burgey use it in that context, always thought it was more a british thing (like you said).
