Lara averages around 80 in dead rubber matches. Langer also averages significantly higher than his career average but it is the opposite for Hayden.

I was just beginning to get incensed at this, but then I saw the thread title.

Best batsman in losses (min 952 runs)

Sutcliffe 1198 runs @ 54.45, 4 tons
Hutton 1700 runs @ 50.00, 3 tons
Hobbs 1889 runs @ 46.07, 6 tons
Bradman 952 runs @ 43.27, 2 tons
Flower 2713 runs @ 43.06, 7 tons
Lara 5316 runs @ 42.19, 14 tons
Nourse 1331 runs @ 41.59, 2 tons
Walcott 1039 runs @ 41.56, 4 tons
Trumper 955 runs @ 41.52, 2 tons
May 1215 runs @ 40.50, 2 tons
Chanderpaul 5370 runs @ 40.07, 9 tons

Lara and Chanderpaul unsurprisingly top the list in total runs (Tendulkar is next at 4088, and beats Chanders with 11 tons - avg 37). Mushfiqur, Root and Matthews lead current players all with over 3k runs.

There probably are easily multiple series but I can’t think of any. Have there been any series (preferably longer ones), where the losing team has both the highest runscorer and highest wicket taker?

In the 1981 Ashes series, Australia had the highest runscorer (Border), and the two highest wickettakers (Alderman and Lillee), and lost 3-1.

Some other instances in Ashes series:
1924-5 (4-1 to Australia). H Sutcliffe (734) and JB Hobbs (573) most runs, MW Tate (38) most wickets
1950-1 (4-1 to Australia), L Hutton (533) most runs, AV Bedser (30) most wickets
1986-7 (2-1 to England), DM Jones (511) most runs, BA Reid (20) most wickets

I was about to mention Sutcliffe and Tate for 1924-25, but hadn't realised that Hobbs had also scored so many. Crazy that they lost that 4-1.

1986-87 is an interesting one, because remembering Chris Broad tonning up constantly it still feels strange that he wasn't the top runscorer. I think he topped the averages though, Deano sneaking home on aggregate through playing more innings (and in classic Deano style saving his biggest innings for the dead rubber 5th Test).

2009 Ashes - Strauss was the leading run scorer, but the next six best were Australian, as were the top 3 wicket takers.

Thomas Barker was an amateur player who played only 9 first class matches for Yorkshire between 1833 to 1849.

In these 9 matches he was responsible for the first five Mankads (or Barkers as they should be) in first class cricket - still a record.

Another bloke you may not have heard of, Barry Richards, once Barkered a bloke during an FC match in the 68/69 SA domestic season.

You got the wrong Thomas Barker. The "Mankading" Thomas Barker played 72 first class matches, mostly for Nottinghamshire, between 1826 and 1845.

My bad, I just followed from a wikipedia link on the Mankad page.

Feel like I’ve been Barkered..
