Players who went up or down in your judgement after going through their records

The more I learned about Imran's on-field performances with bat and ball the less awestruck I became with them, but I still think he's the second best Test cricketer of all time so he fell from a high bar.

I gained a lot more respect for Peter May after my standardised averages project gave him a huge bump and I looked into his career more. That only happened properly really recently after a discussion I had on here about how surprised I was that he got such a big bump.

Aubrey Faulkner and Monty Noble are worse bowlers but much better batsmen when viewed in proper context, which I think makes them more interesting cricketers. I rate them a fair bit higher after absorbing that.

There's an old SA bat, Bruce Mitchell I think, who has a fairly mediocre record overall but has an absurd record in the 4th innings over a decent sample size.

Clyde Walcott went up in my books, and before him sir Len Hutton. Among bowlers, Subs (damn you) has me second guessing Ambrose. I thought he was a smidgen behind Mcgrath, and he still is but post 1994 or whenever he lost some of his fire for whateeve reason. Who's gone up? Ashwin probably.

Maurice Leyland.

His record really stacks up against someone like McCabe but he is never talked about in anything like the same terms. Guess he is one of those England players of that sort of era who had a better test record than first class which really seems to count against them.

Definitely Leyland for me also. Also Clem Hill. Scored a lot of crucial 90s in low scoring games that fly under the radar. Crowe as well.

Grimmett and Laker went down in my estimation but Verity went up. He averaged 24 despite playing so much against Bradman. That's insane imo.

Up or down?
Down. Initially when I was younger basically all the info I had was from writing in whatever cricket books I had read and overall stats (usually listed in those books and considered of less importance). The writing had me thinking he was basically equal to Hutton.

Could've been forgotten here a lot more IMO if he averaged 1.5 less. Benefits from getting into that 46 prefix range.

Up: Peter May, Lindwall, Statham, Kanhai, Greenidge, Crowe

Down : Chappell, Trueman, Barrington, Gavaskar, Ambrose (only marginally)

Up or down depending on what aspect of their record/performances I notice each time : Waqar, Gilchrist, Dravid

For players I watched I don't think the stats will have a bearing on my judgement. Not that I'm saying my judgement is better than analysis but that I'd rather not ruin the enjoyment I have/had from watching those players by raking over how much they averaged against left arm spinners on an overcast day in Bulawayo.

I wouldn't say he's gone up or down in judgement, given I can't judge a guy I've seen very little of...but Temba Bavuma's ODI record jumped off the page at me when I just looked. Averaging 52 at 91 strike rate but has only played 26 games in 7 years, yet is a mainstay in Tests where his record is inferior?

His whole career is baffling for someone like me who's not seen much of him. Look through his Test innings list and it looks like someone who should've been dropped at times but never was...then look through his ODI list and wonder why he didn't play for 2.5 years...then look at his T20I record and wonder if he is actually a bowler.

Greg Chappell? What's wrong in his record?

His List A record at the time was mediocre (it's improved quite a bit recently but still doesn't scream 'pick me for ODIs' overall) and those two ODIs he played earlier in his career were against Bangladesh and Ireland - both at home - so it didn't really move the needle much as to his standing in the format. I believe he only played those two games due to players being rested for those series, and possibly also as a way to get the quota averages up.

He's improved his OD game a lot since then and thoroughly deserves his place - he's improved in Tests too - but I can see why he wasn't particularly well-regarded in ODIs at the time.
