Haha yeah. Woodcock was a figure of such immense respect but his list was a joke - nine of his all time top 12 were English!
Haha. CMJ and Woodcock both definitely had great cricket minds and were terrific servants of the game in their own right but certainly struggled to avoid English bias in these lists, as a lot of English journalists typically do. How the hell is John justifying Frank Woolley over Imran Khan?

Agree with Point 1.

India was a happy hunting ground for fast bowlers during the 1970s and 1980s though Lillee never went there.

1 Batsmen facing Lillee said there was no let-up in aggression. That was what Martin-Jenkins was referring to. Whether that aggression was always effective is another matter.

2 It is sometimes forgotten that Lillee was highly rated in South Africa. He only played a couple of matches there in April 1976 for International Wanderers against a South African Invitation XI. Locals reckoned his 7 for 27 in the second innings of the first match (including Barry Richards for a duck) was the best fast bowling they had seen in the country.
1. I feel like Martin-Jenkins and whoever else you are going with need to fight @Prince EWS to the death. I'm not gonna look for the quote, but I think he said he rates Donald below top tier cos Donald's aggression level was always at 10.

2. You are an absolute goldmine of knowledge. It is really appreciated. Never heard of this. A single FC?? game is not really gonna swing my opinion much, but I do dig the story.

I know someone else who was around in the 90s that criticised Donald's lack of tempo nuance but he did finish with an economy rate below 3.

Why is everyone so eager to tell me how to rate players in my top 10. Do your own list.
Everyone who posts opinions takes flack. You have been posting a lot of opinions recently and taking a lot of flack. Don't take it personally. The lifeblood of this website is us fighting over garbage. The site would die in a week If we all started agreeing with each other. You should be reveling in the knowledge that you have been a major driver of conversation recently, even if people are mostly disagreeing with you... we really have very little to do other than disagreeing with each other.

Nah, the next group of quicks have gaps in their record but not well established weaknesses and limitations like Murali/Warne.

Murali/Warne's reduced effectiveness on the 1st day of tests itself is a reason to put them behind the top tier pacers who as long as the wicket has something in it are a threat every day, every spell of a test match. Great pacers are capable of taking the wicket out of the equation in a way Murali/Warne cannot.

Good luck opening the bowling with Warne/Murali against Hutton/Sutcliffe.
Hutton and Sutcliffe played under very different lbw laws and with no DRS

They’d have to completely change their approach to survive today as pad as the first line of defence wouldn’t work

The LBW law was changed in 1935. Hutton played his entire career under modern (pre DRS) rules.
