Nah, I feel like being contrary about this, even if I will wonder why in the morning.
I know that Geraint missed a fair few across the series as a whole, and it would be interesting to know how many. There must be some way of finding out without scrolling through cricinfo's commentaries from 2005. But I don't remember it being close to as many as Bairstow has missed in only three tests to date. I could be wrong of course, it was a very long time ago. But I don't remember such widespread calls for Chris Read in the same way as we're hearing for Foakes this summer. And we haven't seen much sign of Bairstow's higher batting ceiling so far this summer, although that could change over the next two tests to be fair. To date, he doesn't look as if he's recovered from the time lost due to his injury, and that's what we're looking at this summer, irrespective of what happened 12 months ago.
Woakes vs Hoggard vs Anderson is fun. Before the series, it's not even a discussion of course. But now it feels different, and I know that's really just down to the one test at Lord's. Is he actually unfit? I thought he had been dropped for the last test. Being slightly over the hill (if that's what he is) isn't an injury. Let's see how Jimmy goes at Old Trafford, as we all know he'll probably play there. Mind you, if he isn't picked, then maybe Stokes & BMac aren't convinced by the summer of 2023 version. And I do think that Hoggard is a bit under-rated, arguably with a more to his name in 2005 than Woakes so far in this series. I suppose I'm swayed by Hoggard being absolutely at the peak of his powers in 2005, unlike the other two. But again, if Woakes does the business at OT and The Oval, then I'll reconsider.
