I think others are just questioning the method by which you came to conclusion that Bell is better and trying to establish the flaw in that method. If you are gonna have an opinion then must be prepared to take the hit on that opinion and justify it. I dont think its the forum where you can have an opinion and ppl not gonna question you if they feel its question worthy. Above all its up to you whether you will address those or not. But I don’t think anyone has any motive to attack CartyDurham because CartyDurham said so.
I hadn't commented on who was better because I don't remember Viswanath and only made the comment that I knew family from India who really enjoyed watching him bat in his career. I don't think it would be easy to compare, even if I was 10 years older as there was nothing like the amount of coverage that you got in his era. I remember nearly all of Bell's career obviously.

I was then hit with questions re other players from different eras , which were not relevant to this question , Bradman etc
I asked you about Bradman just to make a comparison that since you havent watched a lot of bradman does that make bradman inferior batsman to you? Its because you were making a point to the guys who voted gundappa that they have watched him or not

Not at all. I asked if anyone had seen Viswanath play.

that’s all it was

as for bradman I didn’t think on a thread about bell and Viswanath that was something needed?

I gave my reasons for bell backed by statistics . That’s all I could do as though I did see Viswanath play it’s a very vague memory

that obviously annoys and upsets some but as I said, should I not be allowed an opinion ?

there are others who rate bell above Viswanath Question their reasons then?

Only opinion. All the other players are a different subject

I feel bell was a better player, all these things you are throwing at me is not relevant to this question

bell or Viswanath

did you see a lot of Viswanath play?

as I said it’s very slightly in bells favour. That doesn’t make Viswanath a bad player at all. He was a good player
how are they not relevant? you rate Bell higher than Viswanath just off raw numbers, I brought up the example of Warner and Taylor because Warner has better stats too at the moment than Taylor and they played in different eras. i'm asking if your logic applies to Bell vs Gundappa why not Warner and Taylor?

nobody thinks Bell is a mug if they say Gundappa is better, idk why you have such insecurity over your opinions that you feel the need to stress the contrary always or take every thing other person states as a personal insult when they're just talking normally without any disclaimers like you do for 3 posts at a time because the latter is implicitly understood especially online

my friend's father saw Gundappa play and he thinks he was one of the best clutch players for India. Viswanath in the 70s was our 2nd best batsman. there are plenty of older members on this forum too who have seen cricket from then

It’s all over the forum, I’m getting ridiculed, accused and basically driven from having an opinion.

I gave my reasons. I gave their test career stats

I was then hit with questions re other players from different eras , which were not relevant to this question , Bradman etc

I asked an innocent question on who has seen viswanath play? That was answered in an aggresive manner, bar one person

what I said and I still believe is that based on the test stats of the two, that Bell is the SLIGHTLY better player. That is all

I also think Viswanath was a good player

that is my opinion. Others disagree but I don’t know how much further I would go.
no you're not, you were the first to post that Bell > Gundappa which is why you were asked and the first to vote too. since then 1 vote for Bell was from your buddy, 1 was from another migrant of the now dead C247 forum. if you get sensitive and defensive when people just ask a reason for your opinion then you shouldn't really post in a comparison thread, these threads get very heated and argumentative over nitpicking details and one user in particular infamously gets personally attacked to the point of abuse sometimes

I’ve given my opinion on this subject. You dislike it so be it

I’ve given the reason why backed by stats

I think there is nothing more to add really

I’ll discuss the other players you mention if and when there is a thread on those comparisons and I’ve been told not to discuss things other than what the thread is about.. Warner and Taylor are not mentioned in the thread title . I’ll discuss those two if a thread about them is started

is that ok?

I’ve had my say and I think it’s now for the best just to move on. For me anyway

it’s only an opinion and I think Viswanath was a quality player . It’s by millimetres I have bell ahead

that’s all it is

this is going to be the new Garner is a better ATG pick because of his batting ability meme isn’t it @Prince EWS
Not at all. I gave my opinion based on the stats and what I’ve seen

you disagree which is perfectly fair but that’s life

I think Viswanath was a great player but imo a millimetre behind bell

what’s wrong with that? Now can we move on please

One last thing. The next time a thread that appears like this, I’m waiting to see who the majority pick , then joining that selection

I apologise to everyone for having an opinion though. I will quickly learn to fall in line

No one on this forum has a problem with unconventional opinions. But members who hold these unconventional opinions should be open to having their opinion challenged and capable of making a logical argument to justify their opinion. To claim that anyone who simply questions your opinion hates you is infantile and childish.

To use a 1 run difference in average as evidence of superiority, particularly when the two players in question:
  • Played in completely different eras
  • For countries based in different continents which generally have completely different pitches
  • Against completely different bowlers
is a very poor argument indeed.

This is all perfectly fair and understandable. I’ve given my opinion on this and the reason why I hold it

it’s totally disliked but so be it

bell is a millimetre the better in this argument for me.
That’s all I’m saying here and not looking for any in depth explanations

it maybe regarded as poor by you and that’s fine, so be it , but I’m allowed to hold that opinion as much as you have yours

so there you go, nothing childish or stupid it’s just the way things are

Viswanath was a great player , I’m not denying that.

So by your own post

  • Played in completely different eras
  • For countries based in different continents which generally have completely different pitches
  • Against completely different bowlers
How do you state beyond question that Viswanath is a better player?

it’s basically just an opinion that simply can’t be proved beyond doubt because of the above factors

now once and for all , you’ve got my answer in a very reasonable manner. It goes both ways for those criteria

they are virtually impossible to split and I can only go on the stats as I saw very little of viswanath and quite a lot of bell

it’s the barest of fractions here , it’s really nothing to be upset about

and as far as I’m concerned that’s it. Over and out. I will no longer reply as it’s pointless

Grow up mate. I’ve never in my life seen a 40+ year old (since you said you remember Viswanath playing) so insecure.

I will do. I’m sorry if having an opinion based on stats upsets you as not seeing every shot played and faced by the two contenders it’s absolutely impossible to judge

so I chose to look at their comparable stats and that shows Bell is an absolute fraction ahead

magazine that doesn’t me Viswanath is a poor player he was a great player

I’m not insecure if I was I wouldn’t be replying. For insecure see those who can’t get over me daring to have a different opinion

it’s really all it is here and that is really it and I plead no one to tag or quote me on this impossible argument

since we’re allowed to have our own opinions i choose to believe he voted Bell just out of spite and doesn’t want to engage in any further discussion because he himself knows how flimsy his whole argument is
