I really do wonder what happened to Carey in India, whether he just got totally bamboozled by his sweep game not working or whether it was just horrible luck. Because he looks in great form these two weeks and was in form in the Aus summer, so wtf happened there?
Possibly just the too often moments of madness like the last over....needs to work on his mental game.

We've definitely had better bowling conditions, so to give up a first innings lead says a lot about the declaration - and how wasteful we've been this evening. There's wickets there.

Absolutely not at all guaranteed that Aus get a first innings lead. I keep saying it but there really is very little after these two.

First innings lead. Are you a time traveller posting from tomorrow?

If so does it rain ?

Not much batting to come after this, England still has their noses in front here, although not as much as they were hoping for…

I honestly don't mind the declaration after seeing how today played out. Issue is that england haven't taken their chances. 3 catches dropped and the no ball wicket.

We haven’t given the lead up yet.

311 for 5. At close of play

khwaja bats through superbly bar one no ball

Carey had his luck but played some quality shots

pray there’s no rain to spoil tomorrow

I think it was fair that YJB came back into the side but I guess they forget that he keeps to a spinner like he doesn't know what spin bowler is (see also Jos Buttler).

Now if only we could find another competent opener overseas (well, two, given Khawaja can't be around for that much longer)
If Australia toured Asia next week I'd open with Head again and bring in Handscomb, but that's obviously not a long-term solution. Hopefully someone leapfrogs Harris by the time Warner is dropped/retires, but sadly I do think we'll probably have to endure a few series of Harris failing before we move on to the real potential replacements.

They were 8 down with only Anderson to come , so the declaration wasn't as wild as some are suggesting, they had chances today and did not take them. Nonetheless England are still in the game especially if they break this partnership early.

Obviously England are not thinking this far ahead, but Bairstow keeping wicket for 4 tests in India is not something I would advise.
