How do Indian fans compare the Dhoni and post-Dhoni era?

Genuinely interested to know the views of Indian fans on how they compare the celebrate the reigns of Dhoni from 2007 to 2014/15 with his successors Kohli and now Rohit from 2015 to date. Which will be looked at more fondly and why?

Not just talking results here but also teams, playing styles, characters, etc.

For once, I won't try to insert too much of my own opinion here.

Whatever it takes!!!
Dhoni has been the best white ball captain in my time of watching cricket IMO.

But the Virat era was better in tests, and we were very unlucky with how things planned out in the WTC 1 finals.

Rohit is a decent to good captain but it was always obvious even in his MI days how reliant he was on his backroom.staff, esp. the analytics. It wud also help if he can actually bat longer than 50 balls in any format. Right now, he is our #2 test batsman after Pant and yet seems to have gotten mentally lazy and unable to bat longer periods.

Definitely think it's time to move past all of them in T20Is. Hardik as captain and maybe one last chance for Virat as opener.

Dhoni got all the ICC titles and the test mace too. Kohli got the test mace as well and was the most successful test captain but didn't get anything else. Rohit is yet to get one.

So, as captain, it is clearly Dhoni all the way.

While Dhoni is criticized for being defensive in test cricket, I don't remember if he made as many selection blunders in test as Kohli/Rohit have. Also, Dhoni didn't have the kind of bowlers Kohli and Rohit have had which might explain why he was defensive. May be with a better bowling unit, Dhoni would have ended with a better reputation as a test captian.

He's 36, I would assume he retires from ODIS after the world cup, similarly whenever the next t20 world cup is.

Test cricket wise not as sure, I suspect its his least favorite format but I think he has genuine affection for it, maybe after the England series if they lose it ?

Talking to an Indian coworker about cricket randomly the other night: “Things just haven’t been the same since Dhoni stopped playing internationally”

It wasn't just bowlers. Dhoni set a score of 600 to chase for NZ just to secure a draw to win the series. He refused to chased a gettable 180 against WI.

He lacked a killer instinct.

Dhoni didn’t have the killer mentality or the passion for playing test cricket that Kohli did.
Not a big fan of Kohli but he captained Ind in ICC tournaments for like 3 times,2 finals and a Semi.
With a bit of fortune he would have won at least a trophy imho.

Dhoni didn't have a good set of Test bowlers ffs. Why do people attribute Test wins to captains instead of bowling attacks?
Nope. He ended up drawing tests that were perfectly winnable, especially away from home, because he was scared of losing series.

And when the bowlers were lacking he surrendered completely.

I'm sorry but this is beyond ridiculous.

South Hampton 2009 - India get a 200 run lead, India unnecessarily set a 600 plus target and end up two wickets short of winning the test.

Newslands 2011 - SA are 130/6 in second innings and Dhoni decides to open up the field and settle for a draw.

Windsor 2011 - India refuse to even attempt to chase a very gettable 180 against an ordinary WI attack, settle for a draw.

Dhoni scarred me forever with 8-0. Under Kohli we had a gun series each in England and Australia, but the wounds of 8-0 have not healed completely.

Again, it's not the 8-0 scorecard but the way we lost. Even losing some iconic games to Pakistan did not feel that bad.

Yes, Dhoni was an ATG LOI captain with his field sets that dried up runs.

3 examples is not a great sample size my dude. A lot easier to hunt wins with a very good bowling attack rather than what Dhoni pulled on for a while.

Three egregious examples is plenty enough. There were several other occasions where the same crap bowling attack had the opposition in trouble and Dhoni would release pressure seemingly for no reason.

Lord's 2011 test: Ishant bowled a great spell and England were 60 odd for 5 and if we'd bowled them out quickly, the target could've been kept down to something chaseable (albeit tough) like 320 or something . India came out after lunch and started with... wait for it... Suresh Raina. It took 10 whole overs after lunch for Ishant to even bowl his first over.

Brisbane 2014 test vs Australia: Australia were 250-6 and more than 150 behind indias total when Dhoni started instructing his bowlers to bowl non stop bumpers with a 7-2 legside field.

I can keep going, there are plenty of examples of Dhoni being a completely inept test captain. Most Indian fans flat out don't care for tests so it's understandable they'd hold Dhoni in high esteem because he was definitely an atg LOI captain. But Kohli, for all his faults was a significant upgrade over Dhoni in tests. I'm pretty sure the **** would've told Bumrah to bowl endless bouncers and ruined him.

Let us also not forget the 1st test in South Africa in 2013/4, when he had them on the mat and nearly let them chase 450.
