Raw Pace but Sprays It All Over

Duncan Spencer.
Mentioned Spencer on the first page.

As for NZ, already mentioned Murray Webb, more well known as a cartoonist but apparently quite the spray gun. Gary Bartlett doesn't seem to have been known for accuracy either, amazingly for someone who threw.

@_Ed_ was Gillespie ever that fast?

Chucking doesn't necessarily equate to accuracy. Charlie Griffiths was suspect and a bit wild. I can relate an incident that happened in the '60s. My fast bowling partner claimed he could throw considerably faster than his normal delivery and that he was going to throw the 4th ball of his opening over. That ball nearly decapitated the square leg umpire and I had no chance of preventing 4 wides from deep fine leg.

Yeah, I recalled him being pretty quick at times, but can't find much to back me up on that. This is the best I've found so far:

He is bit quicker than you think, he bowls a lots of bouncers as well and he is very good at the death," Styris said at the end of the match. "He will be handful on wickets which have more pace than this. He has it in him to play very well in international cricket. He is very aggressive and likes to go after the batsmen and doesn't like to take a backward step which is very important in international cricket. He has taken his chances, in the A tour to Australia three months back where he knocked out some very useful batsmen and again here he has grabbed his opportunity. It's exciting for us that we have another fast bowler coming through in New Zealand cricket who isn't in the 120-130 kmph category."

Here is a faboulous up-close video of Grimmett bowling with Bradman commenting.

I really liked Grimmett’s quicker “over-spinner” that went straight-on to get batsman lbw.

Wish he could’ve been more mellow like this in his playing days.

Tertius Bosch was as quick as Donald if not more. RIP for him.
Both his two sons are pace-bowling all-rounders. I was talking about Corbin, the faster, but wilder of the two. I honestly thought Eathan might have been called up for the Bangladesh tests, but they went with Dupavillon, one of the other tines on the KZN trident; Baartman was selected recently as well, but got dropped without playing?

Tertius Bosch didn't seem particularly quick in the 1992 CWC game v NZ at Eden Park. Which as a youngster at the time I watched a lot of video highlights of over and over and again.

@JBMAC what a cool way to underplay your career to keep this playing field even for amateurs like us.
You should write long articles about different fast bowlers you've kept to and the batsmen whose game you've observed from close quarters!
Sorry mate. well passed the age of writing anecdotes/stories/gossip of the times As it is Arthyritis only allows me 2 fingers to type with comfortably these days. If i had known it would have been of interest i should have started a Project like this when i first joined CW .

Have you thought about speech-to-text? (Not that I've ever heard anything brilliant about the functionality of such applications).

I know a guy who played for Bankstown when Thommo was there. Has a mangled finger from a misbegotten attempt at a slips catch.

Wish you the best mate. Hopefully, while I am sure you find most of the posts/arguments here on cricket aggravating, we still provide you enough humour and entertainment (intentional or otherwise) to make it worth logging in here. :)

Corbin Bosch about to bowl in the CSA 50 Over final BTW - there are dodgy streams out there if you aren't in RSA... [Don't know if I'm allowed to say that.]

I remember Mark Gillespie out here playing a lot of odis and though he wasn't overly successful certainly had some heat. Remember him hitting 147 clicks (for some reason - probably because comms called him fm when the speed gun suggested something more). Fairly injury prone from what I remember but came back as a 33yo to play two successful tests v SA then got hurt again for the last time. Sure looked a cranky bugger too.

The 2 bowlers that spring to mind are both West Indian - Wayne Daniel and Patrick Patterson.

I remember Graham Gooch saying that facing Patterson, I think it was at Sabina Park, was the only time in his career that he thought that he might get hurt whilst he was batting.

But like most bowlers who bowl at that ferocious pace, you're bound to spray it around at times.

Wayne Daniel was very similar - very quick but a bit all over the show. But when he got it right he was very difficult to face.

Literally never heard of these dudes. Did you make these up?
Steven Jack is well remembered in these parts. He was pro with Netherfield in 1993. Had signed for Lancashire the year before but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Had a great attitude at Netherfield as a pro, remembered as an outstanding fast bowling prospect just broken through into the Transvaal team, very aggressive with a positive attitude - made a great impression.
Otherwise no one mentioned Daren Powell, maybe not fast enough?

ahhh Darren Powell, he was fast. I believe he clocked in the lower 90s mph but he became more accurate As his career progressed…the height of that being delivering the ball while he was halfway down the pitch to Baz!

Never impressed at Lancs. Possibly one of their worst signings. Was released early from his kolpak contract.
