Official - Road to Ashes 2023

as burger is keen to point out he had an objectively negative impact on the last ashes

not as in, “bad”, as in the bloke in one drop cost the team more than he scored all tour uh

Currently averaging 46 on the back of one big knock. And that's in Division 2. Division 1 is most certainly a similar standard to Sheffield Shield. England's fringe test players would be far above the mean in Shield. It's hilarious to suggest only Joe Root makes South Australia's team but typically out of touch with reality.
Harris has done well over the past 2 and a bit years for gloucs tbf, this isnt his first rodeo. Renshaw also has a really good county record, handscomb has a good record Bar a poor season with Middlesex 2 years ago.

There's been flops aswell like head tbf.

How many games though? And didn't score 3 tons last year in Div 1?

For the past 5 years Marcus Harris is consistently the best Shield opener

Decent county openers are not exactly falling out of trees. The fact that people like Harris - who very few Australians rate - are consistently able to get county gigs suggests that maybe you should stop talking out of your arse.

Sure. He's pretty much Jennings for Australia. There's a wide chasm between good FC cricketer and test standard. That gap is not narrower for Shield cricket such that only the best English cricketers would make FC teams in Australia.

Completely irrelevant.

Harris is an Australian Test squad member who dominates at Shield level but hasn't been able to step up to Tests. He gets a gig with a Division 2 English County and does alright but not exceptionally. I don't see how that is evidence against Trundler's suggestion that the best England players would probably go ok in the Shield?

And all those mentioned have played Test Cricket. It's not like crap Aussies get gigs in County Cricket, they've either got to be Test standard or at least being mentioned in selection discussions.

Trundler says that fringe players would be doing 'well above average'. There is nothing in the careers and techniques of the likes of, say, Jennings and Sibley to suggest they would be any better here than, say, Hunt or Hughes, let alone being clear standouts, and therefore tempting for an overseas spot. Especially when the importance of the Shield for developing international players is considered, which would militate giving an overseas journeyman a spot over a young home player who might do better in the future.

I think the biggest issue is that there's 6 sides in Australia compared to 18 in England. If it was reversed, I'd see no reason to offer spots to foreign players.

The Sheffield Shield having different priorities doesn't mean fringe test players with international experience wouldn't walk over FC journeyman as they always do. They probably would because the quality of the blokes that dominate Shield isn't better than Div 1's best internationally. Sam Haine would be massive improvement on Jason Sangha.

You're missing the point that you're not going to contract an overseas player just because they're better than one of your worst players, ie good enough to make the team. For it to be worthwhile they have to more or less dominate. This is why guys like Viv and Botham played. Nowadays there's not enough money in the Shield for players good enough to dominate to want to play, and there's no motivation for the Shield sides to give up one of 66 spots in the country to an international journeyman who's going to a middling player.

You keep making stuff up. The fringe players in question here, comparable to Harris - openers of the likes of Jennings - have extensive first class careers yet have not 'walked all over journeymen' in their own domestic competition. The fact is they are journeymen - and there's nothing to suggest they'd do better here, and that they'd be worth a spot with extraneous factors considered. It's not like you're rejecting Barry Richards.

You quoted this exact post, and replied

...but what you said doesn't disprove trundler's point at all? Trundler thinks that the better players in County Div 1 would be good enough to make Shield teams. How is Harris, who dominates the Shield and makes Aus Test squads and gets middling County gigs evidence that Trundler is talking nonsense, when it seems to actually support his point?

This makes sense to me - i.e. there are English domestic players who could make the Shield teams, but wouldn't in practice due to other factors. Seems fair enough.
