I think Ponting is better in close catching positions like slips or silly point but other than that, Rhodes was just a level above everyone at cover-point and midwicket and then among the joint best in the deep fielding in the slog overs.

His anticipation, speed across the turf, and diving technique makes him the best LO fielder ever, IMO.

If we are talking tests, where the catching positions mean so much more, then it is a different conversation.
Ponting and Harry were better at hitting the stumps though.

Cricketer Of The Year
To save runs - Rhodes
To take great catches - Collingwood
To hit the stumps - Ponting
To create fear and menace - Symonds
To be cool wherever you put him - AB

Ponting.

I'd stopped noticing ODIs by the time ABdV was (presumably?) strutting his stuff in the ring, so have no opinion of him.

So, Ponting out of the rest. Ahead of Rhodes on directhittedness. Don't really get the Symonds fielding hype, although I'd probably dismissed him in my mind early as another CH9 commentary Ian Harvey-like hot air fuss over nothing.
Symonds always seemed very lumbering/cumbersome to be in the top fielder conversation.

Mahanama and Dilshan are better than significant number of those names. If you want to throw in non regular names Jehan Mubarak was elite too.

Penny and Randall are the only real challengers to Rhodes that I've seen (Randall before my time but have seen highlights and know that he was the original special powers fielder), so interesting that these guys you mention are better.

Best ODI fielding units

Australia
SA/NZ
Zimbabwe late 90s - early 2000s & WI 75-90
Ireland/Sri Lanka/England
Modern India (post Sachin)
Bangladesh/Pakistan/Afghanistan

Big gap between the top 5 and the rest
Also another big gap between 6-8 and 9-12

Interesting between Jadeja, G Phillips, Jordan, and Maxwell as to who the best is now. It might've been Neesham or Guptill but both have probably played their last ODI.

To be fair he said a significant number, not all of them.
Yeah but the other ones everyone else had already mentioned! (apart from Gary Pratt) (oh and apart from Fairbrother but he was also absolutely exceptional).

Have just watched a Mahanama medley and whilst there's a couple of stunnas in there but nothing to suggest he was anywhere near Fairbrother, Randall or Penney as a fielder.
