Yes in a different era against vastly better quality of players of spin.

Talking about the last decade when pitches in India have been very friendly for all spinners.
No other touring spinner has matched Lyon's consistency though.

Haha this is ludicrously untrue. Warne and Murali both infamously struggled in India.
Herath among the recent spinners too.

Also an astonishingly stupid post from someone who's actually arguing in favour of Lyon. His success in the subcontinent is what's actually caused people to now see him in a more positive light.

He’s really been the main reason Aus has been competitive for decent stretches over the past couple of tours. That and Smith’s runs in 2017. He’s at least made things competitive with the ball.

Yeah, it really used to be that Aus on the back of one or two in form batsman could maybe scrape together a score of 320 or so... which would then be blown out of the water by India putting on 550 because we simply didn't have the bowlers to take wickets, let alone 20 of them. That's no longer an issue now, Australia actually feels like it can compete on some of these surfaces simply because there's always a chance of bowling India out for subpar totals. Definitely wasn't the case on the truly grim tours like 2008 or 2013 where it just seemed a totally hopeless cause.

I think this post actually under sells Lyon’s efforts a bit if anything. Plenty of overseas spinners have gone the journey in India. The way he bowls there now cf when he first toured is noticeably different and better - he’s changed his MO in india to be more effective.
Lyon bowled very well, but I think the odds for him to have a bad series in these conditions are just very low.

Lets' see the spinners who have done well this decade in India:

- Lyon
- Imran Tahir
- Ajaz Patel
- O'Keefe
- Harmer

And can add Kuhenmann and Murphy to the list by the end of the series perhaps. A guy like Jack Leach, on the poorer end, ended up with a better series haul than Warne or Murali ever managed in their career. So it just puts things in perspective.

Lyon has bowled brilliantly but his bowling in this series isn't the reason I think he is better than Jadeja.

The only reason anyone would rank Jadeja ahead of Lyon is because of Jadeja's home record and I am addressing that.

You mean Peter Siddle wasn’t a great attack leader?

Whatever it takes!!!
I am glad I skipped a lot of this thread. Lyon is good. Ashwin is better. Jaddu is 3rd as a spinner among the 3. But as actual test match players, Jaddu > Ashwin > Lyon.

I think the turning point in the 2017 tour with Lyon was he understood how to bowl a faltter trajectory and also got to work on using his angle of starting outside off as an attacking option with his lengths drawn back. It is the one thing Ashwin doesn't do enough and perhaps cannot do, given his run-up and load-up styles.

Lyon has been ****ing brilliant and all 3 are great bowlers for me when it comes to test cricket. A spinner who has won you games in Australia, India, Sri Lanka is definitely nothing to scoff at.

And Lyon has won games in NZ and England.

I really think Lyon is a damn good bowler, criminally underrated by many. But Jadeja has that extra bit of nous and guile that Lyon has probably just lacked at times when he's stubbornly bowled just that little bit too straight. Jadeja just knows how to get ****s out.
This is doubly funny followed by the next line about Jadeja cos that describes about 80% of Jadeja’s wickets
