I think this is an interesting topic that hasn't been well-discussed, and I don't think there's a consensus around this rn. Shame it's back to the Big 3 but ah well, it won't be like this for the rest of eternity most certainly. As to that this is doubly mid-series: fight me.

Australia still has the best side regardless of this series. But England is playing with the maximum efficiency.

There's no other choice here but England. India have a batting lineup that is susceptible to a 120 allout collapse any day on any pitch, Australia have dodgy batting in most overseas conditions and a bowling attack that struggle against India in two series at home. England are smashing teams home and away. Doesn't even matter at this point what they do in the Ashes, the rest of their success has been too good to ignore.

England won 3-0 in Sri Lanka in 2018 as well. They won 3-1 in South Africa in 2020. They won a match in India in 2021. The current side would only do better.

Also lost in WI and Australia badly if you count pre Stokes era.

hard to say if we are only considering the last 1 year or so(maybe Eng). But for the last 5 years or so, India definitely have been the best team in the world, won everywhere apart from NZ and SA, won twice in Aus, tied in Eng(won nearly ), won in SL, WI, and have been more dominant than any team at home. Current Ind is also better than Aus easily, after having beating them away 2 years back and spanking them currentl, not sure between Ind and Eng. Aus lost a test to a very mediocre SL team also, and only barely won in Pak. They haven’t even won an away Ashes in a long time. Current Aus is an HTB, and in that too, inferior to India.

SkyBet have England as favourites for the Ashes. What are bookies in more neutral countries saying?

Clearly this England side isn’t just a flash in the pan, and the solitary win over India showed we could take the best on. The Ashes definitely the acid test though, not because it’s The Ashes but because it’s five Tests against one of the top sides.

A proper series V India would be tasty for this side now.

Probably depends where they play each other. If England had qualified for the WTC Final then they'd win it. I can't see India losing at home against either side. But which side would you most want to watch? Only one winner there....
