Smith and Cummins are great players.

I have a suspicion that Labu is about to entre a lean time in test cricket. Mark Wood kinda had his number at the back end of the last Ashes tour. We shall see.
Labu averages 70 in Australia, but apart from the amazing concussion sub Ashes and 1 knock in Sri Lanka hasn't done much away. 9 100s at home vs 1 away/neutral.

Other countries might be famous for scary fast bowlers, obdurate openers, wily spinners, or graceful middle order bats but we are good at producing accurate line and length seamers who use the conditions well and get just enough off the pitch and/or in the air to stifle and nibble out batsmen. Every Plunket Shield side is stacked with these kind of bowlers.

Why NZ went away from their long term MO to use 3 bounce bowlers with little swing (even at night) at MM is beyond me.

I also don't know why they sent Duffy home. If Southee or Henry injure themselves in warm ups all 3 of Wags, Tickner, and SK will play again!

I think this is my biggest head scratcher from the Mount. To be fair, I don't watch a lot of domestic four-day cricket so I don't know whether Tickner and Kuggeleijn hit the seam a lot. But I just don't see in which world Kuggeleijn was the selection over Duffy. The only plausible idea I have is that they wanted Kuggeleijn's batting, and he is seen as a close fit bowling-wise to Duffy. Which is so far off base. Duffy is in form, and much better suited to those conditions. He would've bowled better, I reckon, on the night of day 2.

Sounds like it's a bowl first pitch in Wellington. According to Dobell, highest FC score this season in first innings is 225. No innings over 400. Sounds perfect for more Bazball, hit out before you're got out.

It probably will be a bowl first pitch because batting will be easiest later in the match (probably NZ scrapping for a draw or England smashing for a win). Those stats re 1st innings (or all scores) should be taken with a large grain of salt as those 1st class matches were all played in October/November when NZ pitches are all green mambas (think April/May in England) and Conway (Wellington's best bat) was away at the World T20.

The Basin is also the scene of Bazza's most famous moment in cricket (ahead of some slightly lucky slogathons including the fastest 100). He managed to last 775 minutes (13 hours) and 559 balls (93 overs) so it is certainly a place where players can bat long and big.

No, he's gone. We need to pick a couple of young seamers for the tests against Sri Lanka and think about the future.
An attack of Southee - Nathan Smith - Henry Shipley - Tickner with Matt Henry still around as cover sounds good to me.
Don't you say that he a champion type bowler for New Zealand for over decade

Southee is getting old too. Henry should step up soon as leader of the attack with Jamieson and Milne to support him. That will be a strong 3 man attack. Nathan Smith and Macewell can be the bowling allrounders.

I agree but he is the captain, so is harder to drop.

Jamieson won't be fit to play against SL.
