Which pacers would you rank ahead of Murali and Warne as bowlers?

Just an interesting exercise to see how each posters values pacers' contributions compared to elite spinners.

Pls don't say you cant compare, that is the whole point of the thread.

Wondering if anyone of you would not even put Murali and Warne in your top ten.

Let this thread remain . No problem.

Ans to your question

I rate
Marshall, McGrath, Hadlee, Steyn, Ambrose and Imran over Murali/ Warne
Those are my selections too. Just a bit iffy on Ambrose since not sure about his SC record.

The other pacers have too many gaps in their records.

Ambrose would never have been as bad as Warne/ Murali in their weak countries.

Worst case he wouldn’t have taken many wickets with average around 35 .

Looks like I rated Murali above Imran/Hadlee then . I really am confused about position of Murali because of his overseas average.

I would rate zero pacers definitely ahead. For me, Any of Marshall/Hadlee/McGrath/Warne/Murali have strong claims to be ranked as the greatest bowler ever.
Warne/ Murali aren’t better than atleast Marshall and McGrath . About rest it is debatable.

I'd only put 6 quicks in history ahead of them.
The great half dozen:

Marshall
McGrath
Hadlee
Ambrose
Steyn
Kuggeleijn

(Barnes is also ahead, but not strictly a pacer.)

Re the 1st sentence, it is probably about team balance and batting depth. Sobers isn't a good enough 3rd seamer for an ATG side, but is a quality 4th seamer (behind 3 ATGs)/2nd spinner (behind 1 of Warne/Murali). Keith Miller would be fine as a 3rd seamer and allow for Warne and Murali, but would weaken the batting too much.

Murali's lack of success in Australia, and Warne's record in India are problematic.

Hence to McGrath/Marshall/Hadlee/Imran/Steyn/Ambrose are all better. They wouldn't suck in particular countries that bad.
