Why the lack of left arm wristspinners throughout history ?

CricAddict

Cricketer Of The Year
Been tending this list for a while. Top wicket-takers with left arm wrist spin.

Biggest recent change to the top 10 in Tests is Kuldeep Yadav coming along to displace Brad Hogg from the Test list and rocket up to 2nd in internationals. Lakshan Sandakan - who started this effort - has stalled a bit, last playing for Sri Lanka in 2021, but Yadav and Tabraiz Shamsi put together probably means there's more left arm wrist spin in international colours than ever before, so people like Denis Compton are no longer in the internationals top 10. Zahir Khan is the Afghanistan bowler mentioned earlier on I think, currently on 7 wickets from 3 tests and 2/55 in his sole ODI. He's 24, so could well make an impact on the top 10.

It counts all of Wardle's wickets, which I know is inaccurate, but I don't have the footage available to find the real ratio.

Test

1. Paul Adams 134
2. Johnny Wardle 102
3. Chuck Fleetwood-Smith 42
4. Lakshan Sandakan 37
5. Inshan Ali 34
5. Lindsay Kline 34
7. Michael Bevan 29
8. Denis Compton 25
8. Kuldeep Yadav 25
10. Simon Katich 21

All Internationals

1. Brad Hogg 180
2. Kuldeep Yadav 164
3. Paul Adams 163
4. Tabraiz Shamsi 130
5. Johnny Wardle 102
6. Lakshan Sandakan 87
7. Michael Bevan 65
8. Chuck Fleetwood-Smith 42
9. Inshan Ali 34
9. Lindsay Kline 34
Kuldeep Yadav 100% will lead both these tables in the near future since there is not much visible competition nearby and he will be taking up the mantle along with Axar once Ash-Jadeja retire.

Going by averages, Bevan might have been the one of the most effective to ever bowl the style in tests. Which is funny

Kuldeep Yadav made his debut in 2017 , he has played 9 tests in 6 years despite averaging 21 , Axar Patel debuted in 2021 and has played more tests than Kuldeep Yadav .

Kuldeep only got one chance to bowl in Australia , and he got a fifer in a drawn test that Jadeja struggled in , he got one chance in Sri Lanka , picked up 5 wickets @19 ..the only place he didn't really have an impact was England where he was only allowed 9 overs of bowling..

In the Bangladesh series , at the end of 2022 , he picked up 8 wickets in the first test and then got dropped in the second test for Jaydev Unadkat..
He definitely has not gotten the support other spinners in Indian cricket has done if you look at it from a career perspective, the Indian selectors drop him at every opportunity they can but they don't move with the same energy in the batting when it comes to KL Rahul for example.
this is discounting Kuldeep’s calamitous loss of form and confidence around 2018-19 after being smashed by Moeen in ipl.. until years later he was never the same player. he had to learn to bowl quicker through the air for one

again you’re being very superficial by just mentioning Axar at a glance. Axar debuted in the same Chennai test that Kuldeep played and outbowled him to a massive extent with much better control and picked up a 5fer on debut. the difference between them was remarkable in that match. that cemented his place in the team and he went on to play in Ahmedabad and the rest is history… Kuldeep has only himself to blame for not securing his spot at that time instead of Axar

What chance does a player have if you're going to base his test chances on how he plays in IPL ? What's your excuse for him being dropped in the second test vs Bangladesh? Got man of the match and still got dropped . Kuldeep has stepped up in almost every test match he has played for India that's a fact .

Yeah, I agree with @CricAddict . I think Kuldeep will be 30 or so when Ash-Jaddu hang up their boots and should be in prime form and hopefully keeps the flag flying for our spinners along with Washy and Axar. Decent batting depth with Kuldeep being a capable #9 for tests in India at least.

Hopefully he keeps working on his batting to be a good test match #8 by the time Ash-Jaddu are gone.

i’ve given you a test where he didn’t step up and you’re choosing to ignore it.. it isn’t just form, he lost confidence and it wasn’t just ipl, it was the same in the most other matches he played too. notice im not even counting the test he played in england here as it was madness selecting him there with overcast conditions, the Chennai test was perfect place for him and he failed to turn up while Axar did and went on to play more

again who do you drop to play him now? yeah he was harshly dropped vs Bangladesh but he was replaced by a pacer not another spinner. India can only play 11 players at the end of the day and comparing him to Rahul or Kohli makes no sense when I and most others want the other two dropped

yeah Kuldeep has improved massively with the bat since the time he claimed he was a bowling all rounder and has also improved as a bowler to be more adaptive. the team has also backed him a lot with how many times they’ve selected him in the squad in the past despite his form and confidence issues because they’ve known his talent for a long time. any other bowler would have been dropped long long ago especially under the mad wheelhouse of Shastri and Kohli who love changing the squad everytime

This is not about the Indian ****ing test team selection , my fault for getting dragged into another topic but it's about left arm wrist spinners not about who gets into the Indian team .

makes a nonsensical post about the Indian test team selection for no reason

continues to make another nonsensical post after being shown the facts

ends with post about topic being diverted
