Good dominant performance from Motie. Funny thing is I have seen him bowl so much better than that in domestic cricket for lesser returns. Hopefully that has earned him a long old run.

Decent, dominant win but with caveats. This was a weakened Zimbabwe line up and our middle order batting was still pretty shakey. I'm not sure we can get away with Reifer and Chase occupying such key batting positions in South Africa. That could be a painful watch.

Sure it's only Zimbabwe but it'll be reeeaaaaaallllyyyy interesting to see how Haynes justifies leaving Motie out of future series now.

Know the windies just got slapped around in AUS but they genuinly look the strongest they've been in test's in a while. Solid opening pair for the first time in what, 10 years, Motie seems like a good spinner, there seam attack is quality when everyone's fit, quality lower order/engine room aswell with a 6-7-8 of mayers-de silva-holder. Only issue is the 3-5. Chase still playing there is embarassing, blackwood can't seem to figure out if he's a grinder or a slogger, bonner has completely disappeared and i'm not sold on reifer at 3 despite some runs vs zimbabwe.

Yeah I'd say middle order batting is the number one problem.

Seam bowling with the kookaburra is the next. We need a bit more pace to use rather than the proliferation of medium fast swing and seam bowlers we've been producing since using the dukes ball at home.

I would agree but there's absolute daylight between the number one and number two problems. WI would still have the 7th best Kooka seam attack, it's comparable enough to the mid-tier attacks, and it's less of an issue in general given you play the majority of your games with the Duke where your seamers are quite good.

The middle order is dispicable though. Bangladesh and full-strength Zimbabwe* comfortably have better middle orders which would make West Indies 10th in that regard, and a lonnng way from the serious teams. It's a crisis rather than just a weakness, and it's why they keep getting smashed against good teams despite in many ways seeming like they should be upwardly mobile.

*I know people will be sceptical of me saying that but if you think it through - Ervine, Ballance, Williams, Raza is actually quite decent.

I'd probably controversially run with this:

1 Brathwaite
2 Chanderpaul
3 Bravo
4 Hope/Hetmyer
5 Pooran
6 Mayers
7 da Silva
8 Holder
9 Motie
10 Joseph
11 Seales/Roach/Gabriel

In a system with any depth there's no way you'd consider a 36 year old who averages 10 in the last 6 years and likes to fued with the board, two players totally uncommitted to FC cricket or a player who averages 25 after 38 Tests, but imperfect circumstances call for imperfect solutions. The other options - Bonner, Brooks, Chase, Reifer, Blackwood, Mayers as a specialist batsman, Holder in the top six - just do not have the technique, skill and/or temperament to succeed in Tests. The middle order I named has very little chance of paying off but the existing options have even less chance.

Motie can be a handful in sub Continent. Windies tour Pakistan next year. Motie could well be the man that can cause serious trouble to Pak batsmen.

I agree with this. It's a constant source of annoyance that we persist with Blackwood, for example, because he has been comparatively ok compared to Chase et all. He still only averages 31. We have to look for higher standards. The refusal to pick white ball players is ridiculous, especially Brandon King, who scores loads whenever he plays FC cricket, has performed at A level etc but they refuse to pick him and yet are happy to bring in Akeem Jordan after just 5 games, Alick Athanaze after a few good innings etc. It's just not logical.

Personally I would have Brandon King or Alick Athanaze at 4, but otherwise agree with your lineup. Roach should start every home test but never play outside of West Indies or England IMHO. Mayers could also be swapped with another batsmen on away tours in the subcontinent.

There is a view in the Caribbean that he can't play pace. Tbf he has been concussed in two of his last few tests and looks technically at sea against 88mph plus. But I would have thought he deserved a chance to prove this view wrong given he averages 38 at the moment and does actualy soak up deliveries.
