McGrath. Kallis’ bowling was useful but he wasn’t an all-rounder. He took 60 wickets in 47 Tests across seven of the nine countries he toured during his career. McGrath is objectively a top 5 bowler of all time. Arguably top 3. Arguably top 1. Kallis is an ATG bat but comfortably behind McGrath the bowler.
He was an all-rounder, just not as well rounded as others and his bowling is overrated.

About evens i think.

Mcgrath slots into a world xi with Kallis , with malcolm marshal and ambrose, and wasim akram.

This is the all time world XI not including current players ,and from 1990 onwards to keep the era comparison fair.

Hayden
Sehwag
Sangakarra(w/c)
Lara (c)
Tendulkar
Kallis(all rounder)
Akram
Warne
Malcolm Marshall
Ambrose
Mcgrath

this side is unplayable and will beat nearly every team in existence.

Didn’t expect Kallis to win this!
cant compare a bowler to a batter though. cricket being a batter's game.

i rated them about evens. Can someone put that option on the poll- about evens or tie? Both are ATG level, the difference is too subjective to call.

Rating evens is an easy way out and should never be on a poll.

Number of comparison threads in this forum are on par with the number of T20 leagues running around the globe right now. Losing its sheen.

So if someone 10 years from now looks at this poll he should not take it at face value.

P.S. I picked Kallis for fun and to piss off few posters.

@Slifer
What does WI first XI look like ? Does Kallis have a place in it ?
Hunte
Greenidge
Headley
Viv
Lara
Sobers
Dujon+
Marshall
Holding
Garner
Ambrose

With his longevity etc, Kallis might replace Headley. Also, fwiw McGrath would replace Holding in the above XI given a choice.

Yeah Lara at 3 and Kallis at 5 .
You don’t have a spinner in your ATXI ? Have Gibbs instead of Holding.

Hard one.

5th best bowler of all time (Barnes, Marshall, Hadlee, Murali, McGarth) who was poor in the field (except one very good catch) and with the bat (hated his 50 v NZ) VERSUS a top 25 batsman, good slipper, and decent 4th seamer who was more than decent when young.

Kallis overall was a fifth seamer, not a fourth.

No he wasn't.
He took 223 bowling either 3rd (1st change) or 4th, with only 47 when bowling 5th. There were only 6 wickets when bowling 6th (where a 5th seamer would bowl if a spinner was picked).
The idea of a fifth seamer is that they are used more strategically whereas the first four bowlers are called upon to deliver every game.

Did he have the overall bowling load of a regular 3rd or 4th seamer? There must have been many tests where he hardly bowled at all.

I think if he had to bowl 30 to 40 overs a game, his overall figures would be impacted too.
