I agree the face stuff is over the line. It's not his fault he got the call.

I criticised the NZ bits and pieces spinner role because it didn't need to exist since our trip to the UAE in 2018. It weakened our bowling to use this player and CdG in the same eleven. Santner is not a container just because he doesn't get wickets, he's just a white ball 'go at 3 an over' dude which makes him a weapon there. Ajaz or Somerville should have been given a run instead. Instead they were both dicked around and the establishment is shocked they initially suck when we drag them back for the odd game in Asia.

Hesson invested in spinners. It didn't work, but he tried. Stead chose to ignore them and that's fine if he wanted to play to our strengths, but that also means you can't expect the bowlers you don't rate to all of a sudden be good when called up in Asia or the odd SENA test (thinking Somerville at Sydney here).

But if it must exist, SteveNZ and whoever were correct to say Macewell had not earned it - in his 12 Shield seasons he has averaged under 30 with the bat in 6 of them, and averaged 40+ in 5, including 2020-21. He appears to be a very boom bust batsman, scoring 8 of his 11 tons in 2 seasons. That leaves 3 centuries across the remaining 10 (9 and a half tbf to his truncated first).

With the ball, well there's little evidence at all. He has 27 Shield wickets. Most domestic spinners have taken more in a season multiple times. Fair enough if his record was h4x over the short period and we rushed him in (this happens with bowlers globally all the time) but it wasn't.

He was coming off a bust season with the bat (average 19) and no bowling performances to speak of. It was a terrible squad selection. His rivals for the role Rachin Ravindra and especially Cole McConchie have been monstering him.

I also disagree on finding a project - we had 2 - we just refused to acknowledge their existence.

This post is too long so on his 50 over record I'll just say it shows a similar trend. His most recent Ford Trophy was a disaster with the stick though his bowling appears steady but unexceptional.

He has done very well so far so if he wins us a world cup it will be rightly seen as a genius punt.

Why do NZ have to look at other spin options right now? They have 3 quality spinners in LO who can all bat right now in Santner, Bracewell and Sodhi. But it is a concern in tests yes, but Sodhi and Bracewell have been a decent partnership there and it is anyways all about pace in tests for NZ.

Could I get a glass of water with my word salad please?

On the upside, Bracewell's red ball selection gives all other club cricketer hope they can have a terrible season at FC level and still get picked.

Been keeping an eye on Theo van Woerkom over this season and he's been a bit of a beast in Prem cricket with (mainly) ball and a couple of clutch innings with the bat. Seems pretty similar to Bracewell.

Heard Cole mentioned a few posts earlier...

I want to post about Cole McConchie as a spinning all rounder option as he was my great domestic breakthrough hope for a number of years.

He kept getting injured when he had a chance to put together some pressure on selectors and part of being an athlete is core conditioning to prevent injuries. His numbers were the best in the country at one point from an all rounder perspective however and he earned his way into the A team.
From the A team footage he gave the ball too much air and the overseas batsman are more likely to use their feet than NZ domestix so he bowled some expensive spells when selectors were watching him closely.
Then I gave up on him and I don't know what he has done this year but unless he has addressed his bowling speed then he isn't suited to international cricket despite being a strong domestix performer.

Rachin is a better bowler than Michael Bracewell is my other comment.

He's averaging a casual 90 with the bat but I'm not sure he's bowled much.

Cos Bracewell is hardly even a bowler. Like, if Rohit Sharma was randomly picked as an all-rounder from tomorrow and performed ok for a couple of months, would you be saying ok cool our spin bowling all-rounder position is sorted? You'd probably want to see it work for a little bit longer before you were convinced that this non-bowler was a bowler.

Bracewell is more of a Sundar than Rohit Sharma though.

We've got a handful of pace bowling all-rounders in Nathan Smith, Shipley, and Dacewell. Definitely think at the Bay we should play 5 bowlers, no Macewell cos he sucked in the previous #BazBall fixture. Maybe Rachin, definitely Sodhi I reckon. Young over Nicholls. IDK what the opening pair should be; wouldn't mind Latham dropping down the order.

You guys love to pick 4 seamers and the spinner should be able to bat 7 or whatever. Who else is there?
That might change going forward, now that the Wagner, CdG, Jamieson old ball bowling strategy is gone/going.
Might have to pick a legit spinner, now.
Although, selectors will probably, in vain, think they recreate a Wagner.
