The legacy of Steve Smith

Smith has a much overlooked hole in his resume

He failed in 3 innings as a number 8 batsman when picked as a 21 yo leg spinner to play against Pakistan in England

I will not give him due credit until he addresses this obvious weakness

Quite.

Some big Home/Away differences for 50+ players.

Voges (duh) 86/49
Labu 70/39
Headley 77/47
Walcott 69/40
Compton 60/36
Yousuf 65/44
Weekes 69/49
Williamson 65/45
Pollock 68/49
Hussey 61/42
Hayden 57/41
Sobers 66/50!
Miandad 61/45
Shiv 58/45
Lara 58/47
Ponting 56/46

and flipping the coin

Barrington 50/69
Hammond 50/66
Border 45/56

Little surprised at Sobers difference, not that 50 away isn’t still outstanding of course.
damn i can't believe sobers had an away average of 3.0414093e+64

Another thing is that Sachin, Sangakkara etc never actually ever averaged 60 overall. Smith once averaged what 64 or so and even now, he averages 61. That's nuts. And one doesn't have to cherry pick or any of that stuff with Smith
Sachin's 59 avg in 2002 is better than 64 avg in 2010s ?
( incredible when considering Sachin started in mid teens )

Yeah they have been for the vast majority of their careers. I rate Cummins much higher than Smith as a result.

Smith's away record is great. For someone rated as highly his him I find the home average of "only" 64 odd on primarily disgusting roads kind of underwhelming though. I know it sounds weird to criticise someone for averaging 64 but I'd have expected better from the best since Bradman at home given the state of the pitches.

Didn’t want to get labelled a HTB so has kept his average at a mortal level at home. WAG

Seems to be a trend a few people on here are saying, that Smith has batted on roads, which goes back to what I said about this era and the last 10 odd years that its easier to bad during this last ten to 12 years.

I am sure the the likes of Ponting, Lara, Tendulkar etc would be doing the same as Smith is and their average would be near the 60s, maybe even at 60s.

Anyway, Smith will still be an all time great when he retires, where to rank him is difficult as there's been so many many wonderful batsman over the years.

Probably because its not up to the same extent people paint it to be. One summer I can think when Smith absolutely feasted on dead roads was 14/15 vs India (both Kohli and Smith made 4 tons each). Other real cash in summer was 17/18 Ashes but Melbourne aside, wickets were not as flat as the Indian series. Either way I still give a great value to those runs he made in both of the series because he was caring Aus batting alone and without his runs, they were losing the two biggest serieses Aus has

After those two summers, his next best summer (average wise) is this one. He averaged over 70 in both 15/16 and 16/17 but it was mostly as the supporting act for Warner, Voges etc. Look I get it why people looking in to this more than they would for others because there aren't a ****ing lot else to look at re Smith but him padding up stats at home is certainly not in the similar vein as Marnus/ Voges cashing in on NZ or WI

Smith has done a fair share of that too.

What I'm saying is that I would rate Smith's two biggest cash in Summers in Australia (vs India 14/15 and England 17/18) where he averaged 130 plus (I think) and vastly inflates his home average of 64 a lot higher than any of your typical Warner/ Marnus/ Voges cash in summers for reasons mentioned above

Smith's home summers. If I'm going to point at stats padding, I'll be looking at 15/16 and 16/17

Don't forget the 2016 series against Pakistan on the flattest tracks I can imagine when he averaged 110, or 2015 against WI when he averaged 214.
