The legacy of Steve Smith

Weren't some regulations brought in place in the late 00s? Or was that just banning the carbon fibre stuff?
That was just the regulation of materials. And this is not to say Ponting didn't benefit from the increases in thicknesses, it started around his time, but it definitely reached its peak around the mid 10s. I started watching seriously in 2010, and in my opinion the batsmen getting fours and sixes off clear mishits increased noticeably even in the five years succeeding.

Time and era adjustments are going to be very gentle to the solid batsman today, boost the world class a bit and elevate Smith to Godlike status imo.

Forget Top 20, he's right in there for next after Bradman. 30 tons at 61!!!!! And he's doing it in relatively decent era for bowlers too!!!

He’s the best batsman of his generation and the 2nd best Australian batsman ever

His numbers demand that rating

I still have Brian Lara as the best batsman I have seen. Nothing against Smith who will go down as an all time great when he retires....probably already reached that status.

Its all opinion I think. There is no right or wrong. Just appreciate the all time greats (batters/bowlers) when they come along.

I will say as time has passed it's become harder and harder to deny that he almost certainly is the second best after Bradman, it might be a different story if he ends up falling as his career goes on, but right now I am comfortable enough to give the second best title to him.

If he retired after this test I’d have no hesitation placing him in the Sobers/Tendulkar/Hobbs group I have behind Bradman.
