Somehow Barry Richards is an ATG but Sutcliffe isn’t even borderline? Makes sense.

If there is a mismatch between reputation and quality of performance, the reputation is self-evidently wrong.

I guess everyone defines ATG differently. But saying reputation is important even when undeserved sounds like an MLM pitch.
Not necessarily. Quality of performance/record is most important but reputation based on how you play is something that opposition/cricket world determines and is a factor. To get in the very top tier you need both unequivocally IMO.

Ponting was being put up there with Sachin and Lara, Sanga wasn't. Their records are comparable but Ponting had a better reputation.

That could just be because Australian voices are louder than Sri Lankan ones though. Maybe Ponting just played in more marquee series by virtue of being Australian whilst Sanga was murdering Ajmal mercilessly in front of 50 construction workers and a bored Sheikh.

Also, regarding Ponting, he debuted I believe in the late to mid 90s if I recall. And the three top teams (outside Australia) all still had decent attacks: WI, RSA and Pak. He played series against each, where he did well. Then add that to the unbelievable peak on the 2000s; yeah Ricky is an atg. He's probably one of the few players I'll say is good vs raw pace.
