*Official* New Zealand vs Pakistan 2022/23

Pretty vital innings from Kane, NZ otherwise seemed intent on throwing away their hard won advantage with some unnecessarily inventive strokeplay. Really hope this is the start of a revival for him. He was really being asked to do too much: captain and number 3 in all 3 formats, plus captaining SRH all while dealing with a serious recurring injury. Would be great if he could spend the next couple years just trying to be the best player that he can be.

Think they’ll need a lead of 75+ to have a chance at winning this. even if they make that it’ll take a hell of an effort from the bowlers, this pitch isn’t really breaking up. On the bright side, two days with their feet up should at least mean that the attack is fresh and ready for the work.

Wouldn't mind seeing Conway continue as opener, I think it just makes sense. I think young is good player but more suited for the middle order.
The batting line up actually looks really solid for both home and away, good players of spin throughout the order.
Any one else betting on this match, the odds are interesting I put money on nz winning at $8.50. Cashed out the draw at $3.30 and put it on Pakistan at over $6. Tab pretty generous ?

Nice trading mate, and I hope you do well, but I do have to say that the last thing in the world the TAB is, is generous. In fact it's quite the opposite.
Just looking at the trading graphs at the moment, the highs and lows are....
Pakistan : high 15/1, low 1.52
NZ: high 20/1 low 2.52
Draw: high 10/1 low 1.72
I've got 2200 on the draw at an average of 8.2, haven't cashed anything out yet but intend to at some stage.
Go to BETFAIR and check out the graphs for yourself, and you'll see just how much the TAB are actually pulling your chain.

Man, I was watching highlights of Nz’s win v Pakistan in 2018 and even from just a couple of balls it’s so apparent how much more zip Wagner had compared to now.
Yup, he shouldn’t be here never mind in the playing XI. Most of us on CW noticed this last summer and yet here we are being subjected to another Chris Martin like demise before our eyes during an overseas test match. If they can get rid of Martin Guptill like they did I hope they have the same set of balls and do the same here

Great to see KW peel off a hundred so tidily even if he gave a chance. Think he benefited too from batting with Mitchell and Blundell in proactive moods - I was happy with both their innings. Overall solid innings from everyone except Nicholls and Macewell, which isn't unexpected. I do assume Conway opens for good now, makes the overall lineup a lot stronger.

Agree that Wagner has lost some zip. Hope he gets his 250th test wicket this series and then we try out some new seamers in the home summer, at least one of whom needs to be properly quick (probably Sears though if I was selector would also consider Ferguson and even Fisher).

The Blundell dismissai and non-review probably cost NZ a decent shot at winning the test IMO. If he’d managed to stay till the close of play NZ would be in a position to press on for quick runs and a lead of maybe 125 or so, putting Pakistan under a bit more pressure. Though he escaped a fair few times that innings so justice was done I suppose.

What wasn't solid about Nicholls?

Just a sub-30 score thing?

Or was he shakey?

(I didnt see anything other than his first 10 balls or so. But scoreboard shows he must have been busy). His dismissal was a bit unlucky imo, in that the ball misbehaved a lot, shot seemed reasonable.

He’d batted pretty well up to that point, choosing the right balls to sweep, but self-inflicted dismissal I thought given he’d been there long enough to know how the ball was behaving out of the rough.

That’s been the big change since 2019 for me,seems to give his wicket away too often (when he isn’t being dropped by opp fielders of course). Was not that type of player earlier.

This really has to be one of the most placid tracks seen in a long time. 16 wickets well into the 10th session now calls for easy going.
When you consider Pakistan threw their 1st 4 wickets away, NZ lost 2 of their wickets reverse sweeping, you basically have to give your wicket away.
Having said all that, there is still the odd ball that keeps very low, but because it's so slow batters have had time to dig it out.
Unless there's some sudden demons in the change of conditions, one of the teams will need to capitulate in their 2nd innings to get a result.

Yeah what Moss said, Nicholls brief stay today was perfectly fine up to the dismissal, but he hasn't scored hard runs in quite a long while.
