Meh I cbf changing it around I just did searches for home and away/neutral. I remembered about Younis’ circumstances near the end but I was getting sleepy. fwiw he averages 48.76 away. Just wondering for this purpose for Pakistani cricketers, would you count UAE as home?

I hope not. Let's be honest, none of us are immune to having our biases about players shape our bias of stats, and while there are plenty of other good reasons to rank Warne ahead, Murali's WPM/I is a clearly solid reason to rank him ahead, lack of competition notwithstanding.

FTR, massively agree with the Vern example. Vern did not just have a problem with 'glass knees'... he was just a holding bowler without a lively ball on favourable pitches... and a lazy one, which made his average look really good. Doesn't matter how many games he dodged (I have no idea what the number is). He would have averaged mid 20s+ if he was bowling enough to get anywhere near to 5WPM in the games he played in, even ignoring his alleged pitch dodging.

Or conversely, excluding a large early chunk of a player's career. I always find it funny that this is often done with Imran, as if his figures weren't good enough already despite the fact he took a while to sort his action out.

I do actually think that there is some merit to looking at how players varied over their careers, particularly with someone like Botham who was a completely different player after his back injuries and weight gain from '82, or even, alluding to the discussion above, differences in batting position over a career where it is a factor in the relevant discussion, but such things are rarely given the context they require to be meaningful and are usually just a disingenuous way of trying to eulogise/belittle liked/disliked players.

So it's good when it makes Botham good but bad when it makes Imran good

Yeah I absolutely would. A home game IMO is a game your own board has picked the venue for, rather than the ICC or the board of the opposition. I'd even count that series against Aus in England as home for them. Cricinfo just find it easier to match up the country it's played in with the national teams.

Boredly thinking about this stat tonight. So some people seem to have overhyped Kohli’s slump imo and seemingly are giving up on him as a batsman. So Kohli has gone 18 matches and 3 years without a century. This undisputed ATG went 36 matches and 4 years without a ton, and afterwards ended up scoring 4 more over 24 tests at a 45+ average
