Joe 'Roston Chase' RootMove him to 8.
Admittedly England have been trying this for the last 6-8 years in test cricket, giving plenty of matches to good white ball batsmen like Jos Buttler, Jason Roy, Alex Hales etc. But it never worked, until now. Partially down to the opposition/conditions perhaps, but might also help that they've now fully committed to the approach rather than just dipping a toe in.It's almost like they've gone "We've been great at white-ball cricket, poor at Test cricket . . . let's just play white ball cricket in Tests and see if it works"
Nah sorry.....there's a massive difference. Yeah we gave test spots to good white ball batters but we asked them to perform like test batsmen......or more likely gave them no instruction and left them muddled with what approach to take.Admittedly England have been trying this for the last 6-8 years in test cricket, giving plenty of matches to good white ball batsmen like Jos Buttler, Jason Roy, Alex Hales etc. But it never worked, until now. Joe Root is a waaaaaay better bowler than ChaseJoe 'Roston Chase' Root
Only thing Roston has over Joe is his name. Beautiful rhythmical sounding name, unlike his bowling sadlyJoe 'Roston Chase' Root
Kind of, but it runs counter to the gist of your comment. Adders is right that just because England have picked some successful white-ball players in Tests isn't the same thing as this approach they've adopted. They haven't been trying it for 6-8 yearsIsn't that what I said in my last sentence?
Ehh, don't think we really disagree.Kind of, but it runs counter to the gist of your comment. Adders is right that just because England have picked some successful white-ball players in Tests isn't the same thing as this approach they've adopted. They haven't been trying it for 6-8 years
I reject the premise of this post because when I think Aus are crap I say so. I predicted they wouldn't make it out of the group stage of the T20 WC, as an example. By contrast, when England are junk, Hinton disappears. Which explains his absence from this site for nigh on a decade.@Burgey vs @chris.hinton
Both of you are ****-a-hoop about your own countries. Take up an avatar challenge for the Ashes if you are so confident.
You make a good point. The saving grace of these two matches is that there has been some good aggressive batting - something that appeals to the followers of white ball cricket.Yeah it's objectively a bit of a hard watch, though for some reason no one complains about the spectacle if a dozen or more wickets fall in a day's play and the contest is just as uneven but towards the bowling team. I guess it's just a harder spectacle and there's the thought the whole thing is just going to be a bat-a-thon when games start like these two, as opposed to the expectation a deck will flatten out and allow batsmen to get into the game second dig if a pitch is very bowler-friendly on day one.
The Windies quicks challenged the batsmen at times over the first 2 days, it just wasn't sustainedHas any Test playing nation had a worse day's play (including the pitch preparation and team selection)? Well done to the English batsmen on their positive approach but do true Test cricket aficionados want to see games like this and the other Test currently being played.
Personally I like to see a good contest between bat and ball and neither of these matches have provided this thus far - apart from the West Indies openers' battle against a classy pace attack.
They haven't won a test in NZ since 2008 (Southee's debut). It will be interesting to see how BazBall goes here.I reject the premise of this post because when I think Aus are crap I say so. But I never do avatar challenges. They are beneath me.
Generally though, England needs to focus on winning a test match in Australia before contemplating winning a series here. Even when they were chronically lolworthy in the 1990s and early 2000s they usually jagged one test, but it's now been three full tours where they haven't given a yelp. They even won one in 74/75 (albeit a dead rubber). Their fans will be hoping that by 2026 they'll be able to finally share a TikTok celebrating a test win in the Great Southern Land.
Though it's unlikely.
lol so no one has posted to the 'gram about an England test win in NZ. CuteThey haven't won a test in NZ since 2008 (Southee's debut). It will be interesting to see how BazBall goes here.
