First ball, CD v Otago:

Rance to Rutherford; blocked, Rance gets a touch on the ball (perhaps) and it ricochets onto the non-striker's stumps. The appeal is deemed not out by the umpire, and all of CD stand around quizzically. The batters then notice that no one has gone to collect the ball, and jog a simple two.
It was definitely out.

I've watched the entire first four Otago Plunket Shield games via YouTube and thoroughly enjoyed them. These are my observations regarding the Otago side. The batting is generally weak which is underlined by the top two in the batting averages so far are both bowlers with Gibson on 43 and Rippon on 39. Obviously it doesn't help when your star batsman is averaging single figures!

There are however some bright spots. The boy Cumming looks a fabulous player with a great technique, and I would say a dead cert to play Test cricket and probably quite a lot of it. Yes he often gets out after looking good and only making 20 or 30, but my guess is that is a concentration issue when constantly having to face 1st class bowlers, whereas he was probably getting away with it at age group/lower level cricket. With experience I'm sure this problem will disappear.

Superstar in waiting Max Chu has looked very good in almost every innings and has played with a refreshing positivity before finding ways to get himself out. Some really big scores must be imminent and I'd imagine the captaincy is not far away either. Parkes also looks a very good player.

On the bowling front I've been impressed with Michael Rae but he didn't play in the last game so I assume he must have been injured. He was outstanding v Canterbury and extremely unlucky in his opening spell. Duffy seems to be excellent one moment and terrible the next, and McKay would be a much more effective bowler if he reduced his run up by 25%. I like Rippon's batting but I'm afraid to say his bowling is dreadful. No turn (despite being a wrist spinner), no variation, and frequently dispatched to all parts by even mediocre batsmen. Muller looks a decent bowler and a more than useful No8.

Captaincy seems poor too. In the last game v ND a possible 50 odd 1st innings lead was turned into a 96 run deficit mainly due to a 100 run 9th wicket partnership. Nearly all those runs were harvested with great ease off a pie throwing Duffy and an ineffective and expensive Rippon, and yet Rutherford kept throwing the ball to them instead of making a badly needed change. The game was lost right there.

I'm very much looking forward to the remaining four 1st class games in February.
Good post. Interested in the observations on Duffy - 'excellent one moment and terrible the next'. His whole career is very up-and-down - FC average in the low 30s, but in 10 seasons he has not had a single season where he's averaged in the 30s; always been very good in the 20s or terrible 40+. Was he just good with the new ball and poor with the old, or something else?

Wow, that's an incredible stat - averages in the 30s overall but never for a single season. That speaks to crazy inconsistencies, and not just game-on-game, but season-long.

Yup, there it is. I think it was the 15-16 and 16-17 seasons he was falling away horribly and his action went to pieces. Not sure if the other bad seasons in 18-91 and 21-22 were action-related or not.

They don't seem to post these Development XI scorecards on the main NZC page. Another high scoring game against Canterbury A.

Hmmm. Curtis Heaphy keeping for the development team. Seemed to go pretty well on FC debut (not so good in the second game!). I hope this isn't another one of those "great ideas" that the funky-funksters go in for.... Like Finn Allen keeping last season which was... hmmm... interesting.

Wow, that is insane. It's not like he's taking 5 wickets at 22 in those good years or bowling hardly any balls in the weak years, either (Duffy, I mean)

Oh, I missed that. He is reported as being a "handy wicket keeper", but yeah he did well just as an opener in his first Plunket Shield game. Hopefully it's just for white ball cricket. Pretty rough treatment of Nuttall by the Development batsmen.

I dont really understand this post, that he is keeping?

He always kept in the underage tournaments for CD, that I noticed.

This probably most closely relates to who picked him in the domestic selector draft

CD have both Cleaver and Wiggins so he probably won't need to keep for them any time soon - forced his way in on batting alone - but yeah it does seem like he's a legit keeper. I think Heath was just asking if that was the case or not because he didn't know.

Well, either way. For CD, he's opening the batting. For the development squad, he's middle order and keeping. I don't feel we're setting up our young'uns for success when we keep changing what role they're playing in their formative years. Give them some consistency FFS.
