Adorable Asshole

International Regular
I wonder if regrets that 36*

Got him a permanent reputation as a Boycott level stodgy batsman with no attacking prowess. In reality he took the opening bowlers on plenty of times in his career right?
In India he has a lot of critics. People who call him selfish and a slow batsman.

I have him and Hutton very close/equal, but personal preference plus proven Hobbs synergy makes me put him in XI’s over Hutton.
100 percent correct statement.I can’t think Sutcliffe being more than 2-3 runs behind Hutton’s average,if you put Sutcliffe in Hutton’s time.
Hutton is no.2 after Hobbs but Sutcliffe is almost Hutton’s equal at no.3 spot Imho.
And I don’t think Hutton is good enough to break Hobbs/Sutcliffe partnership in ATG team.

Sutcliffe got considerably less hype than the other pre-war England immortals. Hammond, Hobbs, Barnes etc. Can extend that to Hutton and Compton also, both debuted before the War. Even Frank Woolley and Peter May seemed to get more glamour and adulation than Herbert.

Yeah, Sutcliffe seems like the Langer of the great Australian side of 01-07. As an opener averaged 50 and was only slightly behind Hayden as a bat statistically, and in reality he was putting in winning performancs nearly as often as Hayden, Ponting, Gilly and McWarne while also being an absolute staple of the team like them, but had zero hype or huge following. Was always just kind of there

Gavaskar had a type of compact strength like Sachin and gave the ball a good thrash when he went after one. Could be quite a fun player to watch when he was in. Big fan of Boycott and he's from my hometown but Sunny was definitely more expansive.

Good comparison. Joel Garner is the closest I can think of to an equivalent for the great WI team.

Geoff Armstrong, in his book The 100 Greatest Cricketers, actually has these two men opening the batting together - for his All Time 3rd XI...

I can't imagine there are too many of us who would rank these two blokes as only the 5th and 6th greatest openers ever.

I assumed maybe Garner had more love than Desmond Haynes but maybe I'm wrong, was before my time. He was popular enough to have a nickname and stuff

Langer on the other hand, well I can't remember ever meeting another kid who considered him a favourite player. I usually actively wanted him to get out so Ponting could have a bat

Yeah he's got Victor Trumper ahead of Gavaskar!

Yeah but I guess my thinking is Garner's achievements went under the radar whereas Haynes was always rated about right

Hmm. Hutton, Gavaskar, Boycott and Richards above them? Or maybe Simpson?

Edit - lol thought you were referring to Sutcliffe and Hobbs
