Who is the worst player of all time that would be selected in every XI in history?

He’d have got the 5th Test yeah.

I mean I don’t think the better batting than Bell really stands up. Bell of 05 was pretty erm, well yeah. But Bell was actually ahead of Pietersen in the pecking order at that point, and therefore also Thorpe. Across the career, Bell a much better Test bat than Watson.

But yeah he’s have got picked ahead of Collingwood though ultimately that would have been a mistake as Colly was a better Test bat than Watson and there’s no point in that time period where we really needed Watson’s subpar bowling.

I actually quite like Watson, but.
ok this i take exception to! reckon watto was an excellent bowler, and maybe a bit of perceived underachievement with the bat often filters into people forgetting just how useful a bowler the great man was to an attack

he beats out henry nicholls for that spot easily ESPECIALLY given that the match was in england

edit: much as i love colin there's a fair argument he's got a point of entry there as well
Nah. Nicholls was averaging over 40 then and still averages 38.9, while Watson played 4 tests at no 7 averaging 14.5 so I think CDG's spot would be safe.

All this disrespect for Big Watto.

But yeah he really did fail to deliver on his promises. I remember his breakout summer in the '09 season where he was getting an 80+ score seemingly every test thinking he was about to become one of the best openers ever. Just the way he got the runs as much as anything. Looked absolutely beautiful the way he played his drives and pulls. 3 nineties (and an 89) to go with just the one hundred was a real unfortunate return for him. Could have and should have been 5 hundreds (or at least 3-4 accounting for bad luck/getting a peach) if he didn't get the Slater yips near the milestone. All mental for him it seemed, though some of those near tons were still match winning knocks

Alas he never again looked that good in tests

Reid's batting is boosted by old timey India bashing too tho. How good a batsman was he? I'm not sure if I'd take him over a 36 average batsman without his bowling but I don't know anything about him.
Has an amazing tour of South Africa in 1961/2 - actually the most fc runs in a South African season. FC average of 41.35 was probably more representative of his ability.

Watson is a bigger joke than Martyn.
Just make a list of every player who would unequivocally make every XI in history and pick the worst of the bunch. Deciding who’s worse instead of who’s best out of Lara/Tendulkar would be more fun. :santa:

Bob Simpson (or is he too good)?

Would make almost all every side as an opener. For the very few he wouldn't, he would make as a middle order bat who bowled useful leggies, was great in the slips, and a leader of men.

Do you also remember those massive pads he had.....that seemed to get smacked right in front right after he'd just creamed one of those cover drives??Awww Nooo

It's Shakib really.

He walk eyes closed in 80's Windies he improves them by a lot, At times especially in sub cont they had to drop one of the 4 quick to accommodate Harper or Butts, Shakib would have been a great upgrade on Logie/Hooper. The 2000's Saffers also could do with him he's a better bowler then many of mediocre spinners they carried in a very strong team and his batting makes them even more formidable.

India, do I play him over Saurav? Yes I would India at times in 00's struggled to close out games due to lack of fifth bowler, Shakib would have helped them in this case even if batting output is slightly worse.

Aus 99-07 that's a tough one, mostly they never needed the 5 bowler to pick 20 wickets but given their push to putting Symonds/Watson in Test side, I think the think tank wanted a balancing all rounder especially after they got Flintoff'ed in 05.

So imo Shakib has a pretty strong case for all teams post 70's
