As a batsman, yes. As a bloke, no. He stayed around and helped out when Clarke became captain and Australia were no longer all-conquering, and I respected that.
Agree with this totaly. He did the best by the team and to a degree it was to the detriment to his rep as a player.

Post about 2010 Jimmy Anderson stacks up as an atg but no one puts him in that bracket because it's not the whole story.
I definitely rate him higher than most people do. I don’t really use his record before 2010 against him in most comparisons since most ATG fast bowlers have careers around 10-13 years long.

I for one completely agree with fuller and surprised people are pretending he's talking nonsense

Nobody here rates Ponting > Sachin

If he retired after 107 tests with an average of 60, all of CW would. These are facts people

and imho thats stupid that people do

shouldn't penalise a guy for "playing on for too long" if, and this is an important rider, they had a long enough and sustained enough opus that it's reasonable for that to occupy the majority of the weighting, which is how ya differentiate the vogeses and the pontings

I'm as bigger TPC fan as any but that tour was a disaster for him both as a captain and as a batsman. Weird thing though is he kept getting out to Maharaj and Elgar
I'd add NZ away in 2016
How do you rate RSA 2016 in Australia and IND 20/21 in Australia then? Just as a point of reference.

Smith's performances in them?

Solid probably. In 2016, he made 48 unbeaten out of 80 or something in Hobart and ran himself out for fifty odd in Adelaide. Looked set in either innings and those were two difficult wickets bat on

Got better as the series went on in 20/21. Still think he threw away a big one at Gabba

Meant more about the attacks/difficulty of facing them compared to the others mentioned in the thread.

Look how highly Headley and Pollock rated after 22 and 23 tests averaging 60. Averaging 60 after 107 would probably put Ponting as high as 3rd best of all time behind Bradman and Hobbs.

Hmm not sure. India had a prank attack for Gabba. Not sure what SA was like other than Rabada being a gun and Steyn going down in the first test. Oh and Phillander and Abott were there bowling really well so yeah a good attack. India started with a good attack and lost people

This doesn’t really make sense to me. Ponting playing for a couple years longer than he should have to help the team doesn’t make him a worse batsman for me. With your logic, a player should retire when he’s at the end of his peak even if he’s still good enough to be selected and his team would benefit from him continuing to play.

What if Gilly retired after 68 tests averaging 55

Do we consider him Chappell tier? Should we really hold the last 2 years against him

There was a decent period that Prior averaged over 50....are we saying he's in Gillys league?
