The most useless number 3 batsman in cricket

Such an enigma this guy, and probably still the best example of the steep step-up from FC to Tests for certain players.
The weirdest thing is that he was actually good against Australia. You'd expect that an English player who was talented but struggled with either the extra pressure or higher quality of bowling at Test level would be even worse in the Ashes against a good attack in a high profile series, but that he was pretty decent against Aus was paradoxically his only redeeming feature.

I tend to feel like if we just turned it off and back on again and let Ramps' career start one Test earlier or one Test later we might've got a totally different result. The fact that I think this even in hindsight probably explains why selectors kept persisting with him.

Tempted to mention Shrewsbury to trigger PEWS but I can't bring myself to do him like that.

Ramprakash started his Test career with two 27s against the WI - same test that Hick debuted in. Low scoring Test that England won against Walsh/Ambrose/Marshall and Patterson. You'll know it as the Gooch 154* Test.

Anyway, Ramps averaged 27 at the end of his 52 Test career - should've just retired after that first Test.
