Yeah BMac did well as a player, I just hate the whole brand around him.
Was it? I mean having a guy come in and blast 80 from 80 and then lose a match when a mature innings would've seen us to a draw isn't particularly exciting to me imo. It's the Baz PR machine at work. Remember when that positive exciting cricket also lost as a test in England, because the tail keep throwing the bat rather than trying for a draw? We eventually got a series win in England after McCullum had left. All in all, the aussie problem is an age old problem. We've had it since the beginning of time. Under mccullum, cricket was fun, positive, exciting. Didn't wanna miss a ball. Under Kane, not so much.
I remember when Fleming and Lou Vincent chased down 170 without losing a wicket vs Aus. Just shut them out, even if it wasn't particularly aggressive. They saw a low total and didn't panic and just picked it off. This that was during that series were Clarke didn't come over and Hayden captained? And we chased down 350+ twice iircI love Kane as a player, always have and always will. I probably don’t find his batting as pleasing to watch as I once did, but I’ll always tune in to watch him bat. But he just isn’t a very good captain, I think he’s way to defensive to be leading a New Zealand team especially with a super defensive coach in Stead.
His comments after the second game where he said the plan was to take it as deep as possible really pissed me off as a New Zealand cricket fan. You’re chasing 190, why in the world would you need to take the game deep. Win it in 40 overs, we easily have the talent to do that. That to me was kind of the last straw when it came to his captaincy. Kind of shows you his mindset and where he thinks this team is at.
Ross literally nicked a wide lmaoThe problem in that 2015 final wasn't that McCullum fell to Starc at the start. It was getting destroyed by James Faulkner. We were 150/3 after 35 overs. A run a ball was 240; 8 an over was 270. Instead Taylor was dismissed, then Anderson and Ronchi both got ducks, then Vettori and finally Elliot were dismissed so we 7 wickets for 33 to be all out for a terrible 183.
Think it was Hussey captaining, god what an insane series.I remember when Fleming and Lou Vincent chased down 170 without losing a wicket vs Aus. Ponting would've been regular captain (before 2007 WC). Hussey captained.I remember when Fleming and Lou Vincent chased down 170 without losing a wicket vs Aus. That was the gold standard series of Aus sending a B team to NZ. The first 3 or 4 choices of captain all rested and Hussey had to do itI remember when Fleming and Lou Vincent chased down 170 without losing a wicket vs Aus. Yeah, Aus sent a half strength team (Gilly, Ponting, Clarke, maybe McGrath rested) who were kept competitive with nz through small boundaries for the lesser players like White and Haddin who couldn't really front up to Bond and Vettori so they preyed on Gillespie bowling mediums etcThat was the gold standard series of Aus sending a B team to NZ. The Waahmbulance still going strong so many years on. One of the ATG jamsThat was the gold standard series of Aus sending a B team to NZ. The first 3 or 4 choices of captain all rested and Hussey had to do it
I thought Lee was there and not McGrath. They definitely had Hussey because he was skipper and maaaaybe Symonds but I forget which finishers who bowled a bit they had in that series.McGrath was there. The whole bowling attack was actually (McGrath, Bracken, Johnson, Tait, Hogg and Watson). But apart from Hayden and Watto the batting was pure Australia A. Kinda weird choice to rest the batsmen and pick the bowlers for a JAM ODI series actually. I guess with Lee out injured (I think) they wanted to give their replacement options (Tait and Johnson) as much game time as possible.
This was immediately prior to the world cup that they then went through without even a close gsme, typifies Aus attitude to ODIs. One positive from the little NZ series was they got Hayden into form, who probably should have been the player of the tournament rather than McGrathMcGrath was there. It was quite telling how Allen and Phillips successfully took Zampa on while Kane and Latham really struggled with him. If there was one good thing to come out of the series for NZ (apart from Boult's bowling) it was that those two showed they are ready to be given more responsibility.I say relative to Australian historical standards. Not often you visit Aust and basically get handed a gimme wicket up front for 3 games in a row with Finch playing as poorly as he was.
Granted, Warner, Hazelwood, Maxwell are world class. Smith, Carey, Starc, Green & Zampa all very good. Yet we played Zampa like he was Shane Warne, with so much tentativeness and fear.

The third game is one of my all time favourite JAMODI's. The absurdity of being reduced to 40/4, only for Macca to roll back the years and produce the sort of sustained instinctual strokeplay that we always felt was in him but so rarely seen was fantastic. Then the lower order wobble to dash our hopes, only for Gillespie to french cut NZ to within touching distance and then McCullum delivering the coup de grace. It was the sort of absurd theatrics that you play out as a kid when you're in the back yard playing make believe games.I thought Lee was there and not McGrath. They definitely had Hussey because he was skipper and maaaaybe Symonds but I forget which finishers who bowled a bit they had in that series.
2 odi ATGs, 2007 bowler of the tournament, Johnson and maybe an underrated spinner pasted. Nice.
