I say relative to Australian historical standards. Not often you visit Aust and basically get handed a gimme wicket up front for 3 games in a row with Finch playing as poorly as he was.

Granted, Warner, Hazelwood, Maxwell are world class. Smith, Carey, Starc, Green & Zampa all very good. Yet we played Zampa like he was Shane Warne, with so much tentativeness and fear.
Is Maxwell world class? He's never done anything decent against us.

ODI batting average of 34 @ a SR of 125 & 60 wickets with the ball at an ER of 5.5 & his fielding. World-class ODI player.
Fair enough.

His batting vs NZ has been terrible though (even worse than I remembered):
13 matches, 11 innings, 1 n.o., 98 runs @ 9.80 s/r 71

6 wickets for 212 runs @ 35.33 e/r 5.43
If we hadn't gifted him 4 wickets in the 1st ODI the bowling figures would be poor too.

Yeah Finch and Stoinis in the team meant it was basically 9 players

He's not wrong. Its good to see outside media finally bringing up the psychological factor of NZ playing cricket in Aus. I feel like the mediocre players of flemings era dealt better playing in Aus. They were actually competitive. Talent or skill is not our issue over there, our players are just as good. The inferiority mindset complex is there though and it needs a little mccullum-ing.

Its clearly mental for the batsmen, but is it really mental for the bowlers? Feel like NZ's issue was that the bowlers weren't able to consistently maintain pressure after boult and henry shredded the top order the the new rock under lights., which is down to bracewell being inept and santner being a holding spinner most of the time rather than a wicket tacker.

Under Kane and Stead we are often too timid in general. But in Aus we take that to the next level. The pussification of NZ players in AUS needs to stop but I can't see it happening anytime soon. I am sure Allen and Phillips will also become nitty gritty coward accumulators if stead and kane stay in leadership.

I fell in love with NZ cricket once again because of Mccullum's style of leadership/brand of cricket he displayed in the 15 world cup. Yes you can be found out against the right team in unfavorable conditions every now and then but when you get on a roll, its exhilarating and inspiring to the nation. But when you lose games in the fashion we do....boy does it sting that much more huh? I hope positive, attacking cricket is implemented in place once again, so the lads have some fun and we can as well. These current showings are so dour. I commend Kane on putting his stamp of authority on the team over the years and making this squad HIS, but long term we don't need his cowardly, take it to the last ball against big teams approach. Beat them, beat them comfy. You have the TALENT and experience ffs. As soon as Stead said last t20 wc that NZ's approach is to take it to the last ball against these big teams (aus, ind, eng) ... its obvious they have an inferiority complex. On the field its their 11 f**n guys against our 11, not the bank accounts of their boards.

And we just llllllove gifting trophies to Aus, they have won 8 in total, 3 of them coming in a final against us. Seems like we go into tournaments to do the lords' bidding, d**k eng, india or sa out of the cup and proceed to hand it over on a silver platter to the aussies. Management needs to put psychologists in place, get this banana colored monkey off our backs once in for all.

Oh and, Gup out, latham out (f*** his success in india) and ofc, macewell well and truly out. Allen, phillips and Young in. And ffs, give sears and ajaz a run already. We can afford to live without the 3 good games in 20 by the up and coming teenager southee in ODI's, and t20s. Groom the youngins for international games, ffs. I will admit, I do like that Nicholls in odi is not a thing anymore. Good move NZC.

Are Australia going to consider Khawaja for the 50-over World Cup? Because they should. I know he hasn't played ODIs for 3 years since World Cup, but he was in pretty good form around then, obviously has gone from strength to strength in Tests and has the game in the sub-continent.

Khawaja is an absolute gun as an ODI opener and he was terrifying in the series against us over here. Not a bad call at all but just don’t make him bat at three

EVen if he has no ODI future beyond the WC they should bring him in for the reasons you outline. Would be an absolute clutch player for them imo
