Any responses via PMs or other means @cnerd123 from recruitment call? With Shri presumably gone from last years competition that makes it 17 teams presuming everyone else wishes to enter CWC6

@cnerd123 @Charlie B @JOJOXI @Jarquis @Magrat Garlick @StephenZA @honestbharani @ataraxia @SillyCowCorner1

On presumption of 17 participants what do people think a good format is?

Two that stand out are ideally find another participant to make it 18 and a repeat of this format or 3 groups of 6? Any other suggestions?

SOD v Ashgrove: in a rare occurance, Hlengwa was not aggressive enough.

Richard Daly has been a recent addition to the AXI squad. My plan to keep him in there was made more difficult by his high wage and low experience, but the management has eventually decided to keep him. Current captain Ollie Smit is now on the TM, the first casuality of three aging Englishmen (not to say that Daly isn't one -- but he is still short of his prime, as an under-IGTed late bloomer). This game he bowled 10 overs on the trot without a sign of tiredness. Massive.

Both teams keen for CWC6 btw.

O'Callaghan is so good, AX-W are the best of the spoons apparently. Tight game, and just snuck through against Charminster. Commiserations @JOJOXI.
Good game, congratulations on your win @ataraxia. Death bowling from your side was key. 80/0 after 8 overs and 150/2 after 17 overs but only getting 164/5 and then a great little innings from O'Callaghan to turn the tide taking 24 runs of my most trusted bowler in a game changing 13th over.

Tight games to end CWC5 for me, sneaking through v Plymouth Pirates before being on wrong end of a tight game here

TNT and TMOs in for this...

GG CC got hammered in their R1 Stumped Cup match.

Lost by 100 runs.

Mooo, on the other hand, have their opponents 75/4 on a pitch that just rarely favors the spinners.

Congrats to @Charlie B for the win in the CWC5 finals.

Felt like a tight affair, unfortunately the TMOs could not build a big enough total in the first innings and struggled to knock the ball to the boundaries frequently enough. Not through lack of trying!

With a few hiccups, and tight moments The Geese managed to chase down the total with an over and a half to spare.

Well done @Charlie B for winning CWC5!

I'm horrible with remembering what happens in tournaments; please correct me if some of this is wrong:

CWC1: ZCC
CWC2: ZCC
CWC3: GG CC
CWC4: Free HK
CWC5: The Wild Geese

Played a couple of friendly T20s earlier today. Ollie Smit's farewell game was against GG CC. We batted, and Rusty compiled a fantastic fifty on a very tough pitch for batting. In the second innings, chasing 155 there was a collapse to 80. Mwinton cashed in, using his Moooo heritage to take 5-14 (4) - including a hat-trick with a triple wicket maiden. A pretty brilliant career in this format is capped off by a win, for captain Smit.

In the long T20 Joust tournament, AXI drew level with Morpork by a recording a win sans bonus point in the CW encounter. Marita played a good knock, but Fouche aside the team failed to accelerate at the death. A flurry of wickets continued through the first part of the chase. The top order implosion did not, however, unduly affect Winton, who continued his standout fifty-laden tournament to lead AXI to a win. Good hit for Simmonds also, and Daly's game-winning 6 was pleasing.

ZCC won CWC1 and CWC2 both IIRC. And I think FHK won CWC4 - they were the defending champions no?

GG CC won CWC3 and yea The Buy-Ins CWC 5.

Now CWC 5 is (kind of? ) over I would like to thank the organisers. It is a thankless task to organise anything - so now there it is - my genuine thanks and I'm sure everyone would feel the same.

***** at some point in the past couple of weeks you asked for feedback in terms of going forward with the next CWC.

So I am giving my feedback - I would like to say firstly - it is opinion, which is always subjective. If at all possible I have tried to support it with reasoning and examples) Secondly that when one says - I would like to see this or change that it feels harsh. That is because it focuses only on the things you'd personally see or change - we don't discuss the 99 things out of 100 we thought are great - and I did; and so organisers, do please take that as an important given :)

Last thing is I'm certain there are things I point out that I failed to do myself ! so mea culpa (and maybe that makes me more aware of them , to raise!)

  • CWC competitions to my mind are the main focal point of the forum. It is the thing that all of us participate in - some people are in the forum a lot , some less, some enjoy posting on big generic Stumped matters, others just on the detail of friendlies they play! All is good and creates the diverse nature of the 'rich tapestry' which the forum weaves, however the tournament is the cork around which the cricket ball of the forum is woven and therefore needs the most care to make it the 'jewel in the crown' (ok ok I overdid the metaphors there!:))
  • The tournament takes many weeks so I think it is worthwhile given that 'time investment' that the rules from start to end are clear and some space allowed as a chance for the preliminary ideas to be reviewed by all. To maximise the opportunity for the maximum number to be fully engaged in.
  • That there is a chance to query elements of the competition rules; however if someone wants to then change it their reasoning is laid out so it can be seen it is in the interests of the fairness of the competition as a whole rather than a subliminal vested interest.
  • The structure of the tournament should have the goal of being where at all possible fair, equitable and transparent so that folk can obtain equal enjoyment and the same advantages and disadvantages from the commitment over many weeks.
  • The tournament will ideally run without BOTS
  • The system of 3 seemed convoluted and drawn out - a simple top 4 with 1 playing 4 and 2 playing 3 a preference. (I note that many managers did not know who or what was playing who and the traditional method would be simpler to track , particularly in leagues without BOTS).
  • The 'time elapse' setting of matches after the league to be harsher - i.e. before the tournament starts then lay out that 'the last league match is played on Day X' , 'Q Finals must be sent and played by host team by Day X + 7 , SF Day x + 14 etc etc'
  • Some detail around the timing of sending and accepting of invites laid out so it is clear who is in default and then forfeits the game- if it does not run to time. I am sure this will focus everyone to make sure a forfeit does not become a reality in practice. It will reduce the elongated length of the tournament which understandably reduces the interest of the teams who did not qualify for the knock out.
  • The matches for 11th 12th place etc were probably meant in the spirt of keeping people occupied whilst the system of 3 slowly played out. However if we played a simpler tighter format it would not be needed. And in practice it merely turned rather messy (as they played in no particular order) and I think some of the games are still due when the final has already completed. I am sure if managers wanted to play these games they could do so themselves (if people were still keen the simpler format above and tighter scheduling would allow them to be played - from bottom to top - in the conventional matter). I would not favour this though as most people have been keen for weeks to move onto CWC 6 and have already forgotten CWC 5 !
Much of what I said is already 90% in place and occurs formally, informally (and/or) behind the scenes.

Good vibes
George (Jura and the Wild Geese)

Yea some good feedback.

I think we definitely need a structure without bots, and that also puts main and affiliate teams in different groups whilst still having two (or more) equally strong groups. Let's see how many teams sign up first and then decide.

I was going to suggest a deadline within which to schedule the KO stage matches, but people have RL commitments and I didn't want them to feel pressured or burdened. Maybe in CWC6 we'll put a fairly reasonable deadline in place (2 weeks?) and see how that goes.

I quite liked the seeding matches myself tbh. Been swamped with work lately but wanted to update the final standings and do a whole tournament review at the end! I think it also looks good in historical records - very important for me that ZCC nabbed 3rd place and that FHK took home the plate championship

I also like the eliminator system because it gives top-seeded teams two cracks at the Final, rather than just 1 shot that you get with traditional Semi-Final / Final system. Even if we do a Top 4 rather than Top 3, I'd want to adopt the IPL style play-off system (1 vs 2 in Eliminator 1, 3 vs 4 in Play-off, then Loser of 1v2 against winner of 3v4 in Eliminator 2, winner of both Eliminators in the Final). Have to reward the teams that top the league stage with something, otherwise effectively there's no difference between finishing 1st and 4th.

Finally - who wants to take the lead in putting together CWC6? @ataraxia @JOJOXI @Charlie B ? I'm happy to support again. I'm also in no rush to get this started given RL work burden atm + my Dev teams suck and need more time to develop

Not keen to organise CWC6 sorry, real life about to get busy again.

I opened the AX-W youth pull list, and sighed once more -- no bat averaging over 20. With the choice between three Englishmen, and two (worse) Bangladeshis I opted for Govind Shinjinee.

...and what a choice it turned out to be!
