The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Quite a lot of the batsmen picked above (e.g. Hayden, Smith, Sangakkara, Lara and Gilchrist) are right-arm bowlers according to Cricinfo.
Meanwhile, Verity batted right-handed.

An XI who batted left-handed and were left-arm bowlers:
Bill Lawry
Arthur Morris
Martin Donnelly
Allan Border
Garry Sobers
Quinton de Kock+
Shakib Al Hasan
Ravindra Jadeja
Alan Davidson
Wasim Akram
Bill Johnston

tbh completely forgot about Pollock when doing my XI

Smith*
Hayden
Sangakkara
Lara
Pollock
Sobers
Gilchrist+
Wasim
Davidson
Johnson
Verity/Underwood

yeah ok I’ll give up on Shakib. Still an argument for Border somewhere in there, iirc all those top order players and Gilly are quite aggressive, Border does complement the rest pretty much perfectly.

D Vettori*
E Tindill (wk) (Test av of 9 - gulp, but 1st class 30)
N Wagner
R Collinge
T Boult

* Amongst allrounders Oram, Ryder and Neesham all bat left and bowl right. Corey Anderson was left and left if you want Vettori at 8. Likewise in the other team Hadlee was also right arm bowler, but lefthanded bat.

** John Wright and Tom Lathan could also open.

NZ right handers
Turner

Williamson (c)

Taylor
Watling (wk)
C Cairns
Hadlee
J Bracewell
Cowie

Southee and McCullum unlucky to miss out.

Bernard Julien? Though picking a guy with an average of 37 is desperate even for an XI that short of bowling.
B Johnston
W, FFS.

Also if I was picking a spinner to face an AT lefties XI I'd pick Murali as he turns the ball away.

The bat-left-bowl-right XI is strong:
Graeme Smith
Matthew Hayden
Kumar Sangakkara
Graeme Pollock
Brian Lara
Ben Stokes
Adam Gilchrist+
Richard Hadlee
Bill O'Reilly
Curtly Ambrose
Kagiso Rabada
with plenty of options for batters/pace bowlers (Cook, Chanderpaul, Gower, Flower, Lloyd, Langer, Hussey, Harvey; Anderson, Broad, Statham, Morkel, Gregory) but no real alternatives to O'Reilly as the spin bowler.

The bat-right-bowl-left XI is weaker - hundreds of spin options (Underwood, Verity, Bedi, Lock, Briggs, Blythe), but thin on pace bowlers... also, Murray Bisset is the only wicket-keeper listed by Statsguru as eligible:
Vinoo Mankad
Wilfred Rhodes
Charlie Macartney
Frank Worrell
Denis Compton
Inzamam-ul-Haq
Frank Foster
Murray Bisset+
Trent Boult
Bill Voce
Bill Whitty

What an underrated rivalry has Eng vs RSA has been since latter's re admission to the game. We often talk about Ashes, Border Gavaskar, India vs Pakistan etc but imo non of them has been closely fought as Eng vs SA. Both seem to excel at others home. With all that in mind, let's pick two teams from post 1992

Eng

Trescothick
Cook
Root
Pietersen
Thorpe
Stokes
Prior
Flintoff
Broad
Swann
Anderson

SA

Smith
Kirsten
Amla
Kallis
DeVilliers
Du Plesis
Boucher
Pollock
Mahraj
Steyn
Donald

Two four match series home and away for each team. Would be some viewing

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. McGrath is one of, if not the, first picked ODI player in history from any country
I think some people just like to have a different opinion just for the sake of it when majority holds a unanimous opinion
