Well done South Africa *slow applause*

huge lol at the likelihood crawley lands at the point of "does well enough in this innings it'd vibe as sort of dog to drop him, but he's still obviously ass"
That's what irks me about the whole thing. He so clearly deserves to be dropped but he's been given so much leeway he'll inevitably put in a decent performance, and then he's even more undroppable.

I defended the Harmer selection but seeing the bounce in this pitch think jansen was the better pick with hindsight. Would have been a nightmare playing someone at tall as him from a left arm angle and decent pace on this deck.
as good as harmer has been in county i maintain picking him was a bit silly

two spinners in england when your prime spinner is already pretty damn good and you're leaving out a tall bouncy left arm quick is klown kollege

I feel like I need to have a rant about this selection because it is just so ridiculous. This SA team has one strength, and that is the bowling. So WHY go in with five bowlers???? Especially two spinners in England when the highest average in your top 6 is 39.38 from Elgar! Two of your top 6 have never scored a century at Test level(Rassie and Petersen),Markram has been on a downward curve in Tests for ages, and Erwee and Verreynne haven't even had 10 Tests each. WHERE are the runs supposed to come from???

It's not even like any of the bowlers are at a Philander or Robin Peterson level with the bat,let alone a Pollock level. The bowlers dismissed England for two sub standard scores in the first game and even if they pull a rabbit out of the hat and restrict them here in the 1st innings, I just don't see where the runs are coming from.

Maharaj is the best spinner SA have had since readmission and the pace bowlers are good enough in these conditions to play just four bowlers and pick an extra batsman. It may not result in a lot more runs but atleast you aren't purposely handicapping yourself like this.

I thought they were just over-rating Jansen's batting potential at first (or maybe to be really generous - that I was under-rating it), but it's just straight up 'pick five specialist bowlers' if they've got Harmer at 7. Insane in the circumstances.

I was baffled by the selection too. Yes Old Trafford has been known to turn, though perhaps not quite as much since the redevelopment, but it's always been the fast bowlers who've dashed through sides in England recently. It's not adding anything to the batting, whereas Mulder theoretically could (despite his average of 15 so far). And the surface had a fair coating of grass, dryish but definitely there. Certainly not a nineties dustbowl.

You can add that they didn't bat very well, but going in with a tail that long can't have helped with the batting already being quite weak.

It's starting to remind me of "7 Sajid"

@trundler - remember?
Yes for some odd reason teams have taken this theory of 5 bowlers to the extreme by playing a #7 whose no better then a #9 and they end up paying a price for it re:Pakistan vs Aus and SL and Saffers are following suite.

Until RSA find their own uncles, this is not true. Harmer is no Sajjid.

Look, not gambhiring here, but of course it isn't over we’ve Broad at 8, Foakes in no form, and Stokes hasn't done anything substantial in awhile. Has often said a massive session first up tommorrow, but in low scoring matches, most sessions are massive.

Yet hey it was a very good day for us today. :cool2:
Yup, a couple of quick wickets and we're looking at parity and a 2nd innings shoot out. But as you suggest, this is preferable to what we saw at Lord's.

Excellent day for England. Now need to make hay first innings & aim for minimum 150 lead.

A lead of only 60-70 and it's back to even-stevens with England batting last & some variable bounce already evident.
