No, because harmer has a far better FC batting stats then jansen. It's clearly not weakening the batting lineup, being generous to jansen, he's as good a batsmen as harmer, he's not better. From memory old trafford has a tendency to break up as play goes on, and harmer has a fantastic county record at the ground for essex, don't think you can definitively claim that he weakens the bowling lineup. Sa's issue was picking a lineup with a tail starting at 7 when none of there top 6 average over 40 in test's, not picking harmer.
Harmer's FC stats contra Jansen means **** all, considering Jansen has hardly played. He's just been dismissed for 2 after almost running himself out for 0. The only bright side of this debacle might be the end of the myth of Harmer, the great county basher, but with our luck some people will probably be asking for him to be picked ahead of Ngidi at the Gabba, based on his batting.

Has anyone seriously argued this? And in my mind Harmer is a quality spinner to have as back up to Maharaj.

De Villers, Kallis and many others hardly achieved anything after 25 tests... and they had a consistent run, not given a single test (sometimes 2) over a 4 year period. So you can't actually score Test runs without really been given a chance to settle in tests. As for FC he has been scoring plenty. And if we start asking about players being selected based on runs at FC level we need to replace 2/3rd of the SA batting line-up.
Eh, De Villiers scored multiple centuries in his first series and Kallis acheived much more in his first ten tests than Mulder has in his, so all that is just prime excuse making. I don't think it's over for Mulder by any means, but acting like he is a no brainer selection who would immediately improve the batting just grates.

Random thought: Was there no scope to at least have a Match of the Day style highlights show on free-to-air TV all these years? Even that would have been better than having cricket totally paywalled.

Well it was suggested earlier that Harmer be picked ahead of Ngidi rather than Jansen so you tell me. And yes Harmer should be a back up to Maharaj, and that's all he should be. He certainly shouldn't be picked as a second spinner, unless it's a bunsen in India, which won't be happening in the next few years anyway.

Look I`m not trying to say that Mulder is those players... but pretending 10 Tests is an indication of the quality of a player is just as disingenuous, never mind ten one off test where he never gets a chance to settle. The way Mulder has been treated is horrendous. Mulder would be a far better choice batting wise than any of our current 7/8 on FC alone, and still adds an excellent 5 bowler option... he is a clear no brainer selection. So was Markram, excellent talent scoring FC runs, now been given many opportunities and accommodations and he is not a no brainer selections and deserves to lose his spot.

And I am trying to argue about building a team that will give us a best chance going forward, not just win us a test match now... because we are still sitting with the same problems as from 3-5 years ago. Players like Mulder give us the opportunity to do that, doesn't guarantee it, our current selection policy provides no forward thinking.

Nobody has argued for Harmers inclusion... we discussed the fact that the selectors would include him in the XI, not that anybody here agrees with that selection.

And I use 'we' from the genuine SA fans who post here consistently that understand what is going on in SA cricket not the occasional armchair non-SA comment.

It wasn't a suggestion that Harmer should be picked ahead of Ngidi, but rather that if two spinners is the way to go on this pitch then it makes more sense for Ngidi to make way in order to bolster the batting. As this innings has shown, that's something which desperately needs to be done, not that the selectors see it that way.

This whole bouncers to the tail thing is very weird. Fair enough if Stokes does it but the others are miles better at bowling length.

Just catching up - I don't even care if Rabada scores 300 from here, that selection is one of the most hideously needless own-goals of a despicable lower order I can ever remember.

At least we can probably now confirm the past few Tests have been "yeah we're just gonna pick five bowlers" and not "Jansen is an allrounder" - but still, **** me dead.

Is it unique to England that the gap between the hardest and easiest time to bat during an innings is enormous? These old duke balls are so hittable this summer. This morning nobody could score runs and now anybody could score runs.
