It is crazy to think that South Africa, the greatest producer of top allrounders of all countries, has Maharaj (av of 16!) batting at 7.

They could get rolled for under 150.
I would be happy to get to 150...

But anybody who follows SA cricket knew this was the case. And we do have a decent batting allrounder available scoring centuries in county cricket.

Yeah it's definitely a strategy I can't seem to understand.

Its very simple, they don't want to make hard decisions. We probably only need to play 2 of Ngidi, Jansen and Nortje and we don't need two spinners.. not really. And If you pick the squad such that you don't have the genuine allrounder in the squad and/or another top order batsmen... then you don't need to make those decisions.

Is it weakening the batting lineup when harmer is arguably a better batsmen than Jansen?
Arguably a better batsmen? Why because he smashed some county trundlers around? And it's weakening both the batting and bowling lineups, at a stroke.

Yeah, if only we had Wian Mulder with his mighty batting average of 15 around than all would be well...

We don't need to drop any of Ngidi, Jansen and Nortje. It's solely picking Harmer that's caused all problems. Mean's we had to bat first in helpful conditions after winning the toss.
Also Mulder has had 10 tests and has achieved jack **** with the bat. Jansen already has a better average and a higher score. And of course he is also the more penetrative bowler. Mulder isn't owed a test spot on the basis of being a "genuine allrounder", he'll have to actually score some test runs to do that.

No, because harmer has a far better FC batting stats then jansen. It's clearly not weakening the batting lineup, being generous to jansen, he's as good a batsmen as harmer, he's not better. From memory old trafford has a tendency to break up as play goes on, and harmer has a fantastic county record at the ground for essex, don't think you can definitively claim that he weakens the bowling lineup. Sa's issue was picking a lineup with a tail starting at 7 when none of there top 6 average over 40 in test's, not picking harmer.

De Villers, Kallis and many others hardly achieved anything after 25 tests... and they had a consistent run, not given a single test (sometimes 2) over a 4 year period. So you can't actually score Test runs without really been given a chance to settle in tests. As for FC he has been scoring plenty. And if we start asking about players being selected based on runs at FC level we need to replace 2/3rd of the SA batting line-up.

Why have the Saffers picked two spinners? Might have been an idea to find a FC trundler to bowl wobblers at medium pace
