Most batsmen end up with averages that are fairly reflective of their overall skill and worth to the side. But there are cases where the disparity is too extreme to take their numbers seriously on face value. So this thread is about trying to give our own adjustments based on what we think suits the player, bumping up or down.
To bump up, I would think Atherton should have an average of 43/44 rather than the 37 he ended up with. He faced all of the best pace pairings of the 90s in their prime as opener, arguably was the most tested batsman in cricket history.
To bump down, I would choose Mohd Yusuf, taking him from 52 to around 44. One of the clearest flat track bullies and fairweather batsmen I have ever seen and doesnt deserve a higher average than so many greats.
