Kohli is lucky the rest of the lineup sans Pant is also struggling. That does take the pressure off him frankly.

Does the environment/setup of Indian cricket allow him to take a bit of a break? Roots current run came after a decent chunk of time away from the game after struggling for a while (statistically not as much as Kohli, maybe, but he seemed a diminished player) and Kohli is couple of years older so there's more of chance that he is just in an early-ish terminal decline, but it doesn't seem unfeasible that with some time away from all the pressure could help Kohli rediscover a bit of his mojo

He can very much take a break but commercially speaking, he is still the face of Indian cricket and they wont let him rest anywhere. I am pretty sure ECB wants to have Virat playing these JAM LO games now. Maybe boards like Windies and others who don't have as much clout maybe ok if he decides to not participate but IPL and the big series, I dont think it will be that easy. Its also upto him to mentally take a break and play a lower format of the game and see if he can get back to his basics. My feeling has always been that he will rediscover his touch more in a LO game than in a long format game and then take that confidence forward to other formats. So lets see.

I have a feeling both Kohli & KW will pull the pin in the next couple of years & before their mid 30s.

Both seem past their best, and in KW's case I think the elbow problem is not only keeping him off the park on occasions, but it's preventing him facing the usual 10,000 throw-downs in needs to feel match ready.

I think he's cooked for good. The mind is uncertain, the hands are hard like stone, and the aura has all but blinked out. Lesson for future generations: conduct yourself with a modicum of grace on the cricket field if you want to avoid a severe karmic boomerang knocking you on your ass.

Has been a source of embarrassment many times obviously but all things said and done, still one of the greats of Indian cricket. He gave it his all and dragged some along with him. I'll feel pretty sad when he retires, especially if he goes out on a low like this.

It is now over 1000 days (1005 to be precise) since Virat Kohli last scored a century in professional cricket.

Can you think of any batsman in professional cricket, let alone International cricket, who has gone through a longer dry spell?

Yes, easily.

name and shame them
Actually were you including domestic comps? Ah whatever. Internationally at least I know of Fawad Alam recently, test centuries in 2009 and 2020, one ODI century in 2014. Tbf tho he was dropped from tests between 09 and 2020 lol.

Yessir.

I think Kohli tops the list in terms of number of International Innings between tons as well tbh. At least for someone playing as a pure batter.

Did he even play any competition you can deem domestic other than the IPL? And honestly, I feel it is disingenuous to include T20s when discussing batsmen scoring 100s.

Probably, but we do play a lot of international cricket these days. But yeah a big slump for him, probably more noticeable because he was great across multiple formats and has been **** across them all. 3 years though for a slump like that is not that unusual in cricket history imo.

Doesn't make a difference whether you include them or not when the stat it not doing something lol

I can't think of any other batter that's continued to play professional cricket for 3 years without tonning up. Usually players who go through such long spells either get dropped, or have a secondary skill that keeps them in the side (keeping/bowling).

To be fair to Kohli, the 3 years haven't been exactly "normal years" when it came to the international schedule. Obviously the longer this goes, the less applicable of an excuse this is for him, but just want to point out it's not quite comparable to other calendar measured dry spells historically.
